400 miles and it works flawlessly. Barely gets hot to the touch after a ride. No dings or marks in it yet so not looking at creating a shield yet. I bad thing is I got a cheap in line fuse holder and the fuse wants to wiggle out. Do not buy the $1.99 ones.

    What is an R/R

What is this, and why do I need to modify it?

One of the things that you will find in MANY VFR forum threads is the R/R issues with VFR's and other Honda's. The original R/R had no fins and from what I read and experienced is they overheat and go bad. There are a number of fixes, one of which was replacing the factory one with one from Rick's and I did that. That brand new one went bad and when I did some checking with Rick's I ended up finding Rick was going to recal ALL their R/R's (these years) due to an issue with the way they were mfg. This left me with buying one from the factory and I wasn't willing to pay over $200 for one when they (Honda) give it NO warranty. Yes, you bought it and put it on and it worked and that was the end of your warranty. Take it out tomorrow and it dies and YOU ARE OUT $200. Another issue with the VFR's was the problem with wiring. Many said the wiring was poorly designed and would/could lead to melted connectors and killing your R/R or visa versa. Ok there were tons of fixes that included R/R's from other brands and etc etc etc. I took the best of both worlds and fixed it with the least/best way I could find.

YOU MAY NOT NEED it but I recorded all of this for the ones that have had issues and want a TRIED and TRUE fix not one that someone heard about it from a friend who cousin did it. I would rather have overkill than sit on the road with a dead battery waiting for the tow company to come along and abuse my VFR'r

THIS IS WHY FORUMS ARE SO AWESOME - You may not need it but if you do HERE IT IS

This is from a Rotax page but here it is:

The regulator slash rectifier performs two tasks. Power coming out of your engine is AC power. The two yellow black wires coming from your magneto each have a different "phase". The regulator/rectifier converts this from a 3 phase AC power to a single phase DC.

The magneto is always trying to put out the same amount of power, this creates a problem when the battery is fully charged, or there is no heavy load on the system. A lot like a tap filling a pail of water, if something is drawing water from the pail at the same rate it is entering it will not over flow. But if the water keeps coming in with none being taken out, it will over fill, - thus the battery over charges.

The regulator rectifier prevents this by taking the excess voltage and and converting it to heat to keep the system with acceptable limits.

For the system to work properly, the ground on the plane MUST be good. If the ground is poor the charge that would normally be going into the battery, now goes into the rectifier and possibly other electrical components connected into the system. This of course can cause failure of these components.

For this reason it is imperative that all grounds be checked for corrosion. This can be caused by copper wire connected to a steel airframe, two dissimilar metals will act on each other, add rain, battery acid, vibration and you have copper sulfate which is that blue powder you find on your battery terminals.

The battery is 12 volts DC - and is being charged by the use of the regulator/rectifier it's purpose in the system to to provide a "sink" for the system, reserve power when the engine is at an idle, and a power source for starting and operating equipment when the engine is not running.
