Gas Mileage????

So, I have had my 87 VFR700 for less than a week and had to fill her up. I went 175 miles and had to pump about 4.6 gallons which comes out to 38 MPG. I guess I was expecting a little better, say mid 40's.

I guess a few factors could contribute to less than the best:
1. It's a 21 year old bike
2. It could need some maintenance (plugs, oil change, air filter, etc.)
3. I do a lot of stop and go driving (the go is the fun part)
4. Previous owner removed lower front fairings (I plan to get some new ones
from VFRChuck soon)

I will be taking a trip next week that will be about 100 miles, mostly highway. I will be interested to see what kind of mileage I get on the highway.

Does anyone have any bright ideas (besides laying off the throttle:embarassed to help me do a little better at the pump?

 

worse I've seen was 42, average is between 48 and 52 with a best of 55

 

Thats about all i get 35 to 40 miles per gallon on a gen 6

 

I am at 170 miles on my 85 vf500f and not on reserve yet......

 

Mileage

Got a 1987 VFR700F2 here that I use as a commuter 43 miles each way to work daily. I get between 35 and 40 per gallon given the fact that I gas it from the line, avg 85mph and have softbags on her.

Took a 250 mile highway ride to the beach in L.A. and got 45+/gallon.

New plugs, changed all fluids and synched the carbs recently... I'm guessing this is what you can expect.

Gen 6 Minimum 44, maximum 56 mpg. The lowest was during cold weather because I let it warm up longer.
