    Has anyone tried a Scott oil filter on any one of their bikes? The Scott filter is made with very fine wire screen instead of filter paper. In addition the Scotts filter is reuseable. You just disassemble the unit and wash it in solvent or kerosene. The big advantages of the Scotts are higher oil flow and minimal strain to the oil pump. I know it sounds like my mind is already made up,but seriously if you have some opinions on them ,I would like to hear from you. eddie

    I did some minimal internet research some time back on the re-usables, and read a few articles that talked primarily about money savings with fleet maintenance. All those old links are gone from my "History", but here is one that gives some good arguments, for and against;

    reusable oil filters - Tundra Solutions Forum

    I think the best reason is "distance from the dealer's location". The one thing mentioned that did not get followed up on was the concern that they could not be properly shop-cleaned, and needed to cleaned via ultrasound. Read all three pages in the above link, and it sounds just like us (VFRWorld gang, that is).

    Howdy LGN; Thanks for your response; After thinking about it I can understand the wire mesh filter being difficult to clean. I still think the wire screen has several advantages
    over the paper type filter media. I bought one for my Harley ,but have not installed it as yet, I will try to do an informal write up after a few months run time. eddie

    It would be interesting to send your oil in for analysis when you do the last change with the traditional filter, and the same when you change oil with the Scotts... A sample sent after a few oil changes could reveal its effectiveness after being re-used a few times.

    Yep, It would make for a good test,call me crazy, but some of the new wave paper filters that are out in the market place today make some very lofty claims about filteration. I have always taken a different view of these super type filters. The way I see it the more a filter filters, smaller particles, it has to become more restrictive and possibly so restrictive that it requires the filter bypass to open and then you have such a good filter that it wont allow the necessary volume of oil to get into the system.
    Has anyone ever had any experience with the above,or am I just taking this to far ?

    the scotts filter has been proven over quite some time, it is a good product.....i used them in my off road bikes over thousands of miles in the desert....with no problems - they do not require ultrasound cleaning. A simple scrub with a toothbrush or medium stiffness brass brush in solvent cleans them to as good as new condition. They also filter smaller particles than standard media filters.......

    Call the folks at Scott's - they are great people and will be more than happy to provide you with the data concerning the filters.

    Dear Norcal; Thanks for your feedback,if the scotts did a good job on your desert bike then I have to believe it will be a good choice for the old VFFR'er. I know the Scotts filter is a pretty expensive unit,but is that why you dont run one on your VFR?
