In the process of removing engine from frame. For the alternator one of the steps in the Clymer says to shift the tranny into gear and have someone press on the rear brake to keep the rotor from turning while removing the bolt. Problem is the bike is 24 years old and there is no brake on the rear and the shifting mechanism and clutch lever/cable has been removed. Are there any other ways to remove this bolt? Thanks. -Lucas
The only thing I can think of to stop the motor from turning is to jam the primary drive gears, which would require removing the clutch cover, or to remove a spark plug and feed some small rope into the cylinder and raise the piston to where it compressed the rope in the combustion chamber. Option #2 is not recommended, unless you pull off the valve cover to make sure that the valves are not open, and even then it is not really a good idea. Connecting rods are strong, but they aren't designed to compress solids. Besides that, small bits of rope could break off and stay in the cylinder. If I was taking apart the motor and had no other choice, I would do it, but that's about it.
This has worked for me several times Get an old drive chain if you can (or carefully use existing) and engage it on the front sprocket, attach other end to either an Anchor bolt (with an eye) drilled into your garage floor or fix a bolt some were on your frame, using some good strong wire,zip ties etc. to hold and lock it in place. This should give a sufficient hold and stop the engine turning while you undo the bolt. This also works for undoing the front sprocket bolt as well. hey this is easier than you think unless you live on mars ? just go to a kragen auto parts or equivalent. most big auto parts rent tools and get a impact wrench ether air with a compressor or electric ? and don't forget a socket good luck
