I have Heli's on my 03 installed by the previous owner. They are rotated all the way forward, stopping just short of hitting the windscreen at full lock.

I want to pull them in and I wondering how much clearance to leave between the bars and the tank at full lock.

Can I pull them in just as far or should I leave room for my fingers/thumbs?

I guess this might be a stupid question, but I have never seen the stock setup.

When I set mine up I turned the bike all the way to one side until it hit the lock and then made sure I had room for my thumb and tightened it down. I then measured the distance form the end of the grip to the tank and adjusted the other side to the same distance, works for me.

    Thanks OKC.

I finally got a chance to adjust my bars today. I followed your recommendations. I loosened one side and pulled the bar all the way to the tank. I gripped the bar as I normally would and moved it out just enough to clear my thumb and heel of my hand. I can't slide my thumb down the grip at full-lock, but with a normal grip every thing clears. Did the same on the other side, torqued everything to 12 ft.lbs. and we're good to go.

I probably pulled them in at least an inch or more.

Well, off for a ride now to see if there is a big difference.

    Thanks again.

    A little off subject

Do your pinch bolts have allen wrench ends? Mine do and have not seen a torque wrench that has this ability. I also can't figure exact spacing, but think your discussion here sorted that out for me, since mine was not stock setup either when I got it.

Sometimes people install them backwards which leads them to sit too far forward and hit the cowl and screen. When they are off the bike, they look backwards but are in fact correct

I have the older model with 2 - 5mm hex pinch bolts on both sides. I used a 5mm hex socket on my microtork wrench dialed in to 144 inch pounds.

Guess that means a trip to the Depot to find a hex socket.

    Got mine at Sears.

Craftsman Part #42675 - 3/8 in. drive, 5mm hex socket.

I think it was about 6 bucks. Also works well on the bolts for the plastics.
