Hello all, I just purchased (stole) a 98 VFR for $3200. It has 14K miles and not a scratch on it. It came with a Micron Carbon exhaust. When I went to look at it, the guy had not ridden it in several months. It started but I did not ride it at the time (I was with the fam and kind of in a hurry). I told him I would give him 4K for it and would return tomorrow to pay/ride the bike. I came back and the bike would not start. I watched him trying to start it and he kept turning it on and off and giving it gas. Every time he turned the key I could hear the fuel pump come on (or so I thought). Anyway, I told him I would buy it as-is for 3 he came back with 3200 so I took it. Got home, threw in some new plugs and it started the first time. Ahhhhhh. So, far I love the bike. I am coming off an 81 GS750 so it is quite a change. I do need some new rubber and was hoping for suggestions. I thought I had seen a thread concerning whether I needed to change both front and back at the same time but now I can't find it. I am also looking for a center stand if someone is interested in unloading theirs. Thx again for any tire suggestions and look forward to riding my new bike.
Hi and welcome to the group. I just got my 93 VFR 750 a week ago saturday and I love it so far. I haven't been able to ride it much yet, but what little I have has been a blast. My previous bike, is a 86 Yamaha Radian YX 600, so the VFR, while totaly not unfamiliar to me is a new ride to get used to. The previous owner of mine put on Pirelli tires. They aren't cheap and I do not know what exact model of Pirelli they are. They seem to do the job well though. On thing I kinda wish is that my exhaust pipe ran out the left side so you could see the whole real wheel. But I do not have th emoney for an exhaust at this time. lol.
Congrates on your new steed. As for tires, don't skimp out and just buy something round and black that will fit. Everybody has their favorite brand and model of tire and before you chose a new set, decide what you are going to use them for. If you like crusing the highway, the get a longer milage tire. If your like to carve around many turns, then look for a DOT sport/race tire. If cost is not a factor, then I suggest find the stickest road tire to ensure maximum grip. The normal trade-off is the softer the rubber, the faster it wears out. Enjoy your new ride.
Go with Michelin Pilot Roads....best bet for all around riding......DO NOT skimp and buy inexpensive rubber, NOT A BARGAIN...I have been riding since before most of these guys were born so I speak from experience (humbly)...do not mean to sound arrogant....good luck on the VFR!!!!!!
Great thx for the tire tips. I live in Boulder, CO and I do a lot of riding in the canyons but I also use my bike for commuting/touring. Might go with those Pilots. Any ideas about a center stand? I looked on eBay and could only find one in Canada. Salvage shops around here have nothing. On another note, I am considering putting the OEM exhaust back on my bike. I know, you are all gasping in horror but that Micron is LOUD. I am also wondering if the high mount is going to cause problems with heat etc. if I mount bags on the back (or my wife sits back there). Any ideas?
I may be willing to sell you my centerstand, you need to be sure that if you retain the aftermarket pipe the center stand will mount.....probably removed it in for that reason......let me know what it is worth...is on my 98 which is for resale.....other parts needed?? drop me a note dan
Pilots! I really like the Michelin Pilots. They work for my overall riding and give me much better wear that the Battelaxes that I had on last. Danyoyo is right. Don't skimp.. you're rarely dissatified with the best.
I bought my bike about 3-4k ago and the previous owner had michelin pilot roads. he was very meticulous about everything concerining the bike and he believed they were the best for the VFR so I'll probably buy them again. They haven't failed me at all yet so I see no need to get experimental.
Have to agree with reg71, and Legs. Have put 7000 kms on michelin pilots this past season. Very comfortable highway ride. Not to bad on loose gravel roads (yes I do ride gravel roads occaionally!) and find that they do need to get warm first to give good "feel" . I usually do a few figure 8's in parking lot before heading out to do some canyon/twisties runs. Michelin Road Pilots are not "cheap", but after riding Dunlops, Metzelers I find the Michelins last a lot longer! Better to have longer between tire changes when spending this much cash, imho. I don't know what kind of riding your'e planning, but Viffers are not really a "racing" machine. I think too many guys forget the real purpose of this bike. If you want racing go with 600 litter bikes ie. cbr, ninjas etc....
