Help with tank bags

I'm not sure if there is a thread on this already but if there is can someone please point me in the right direction. I just bought a 6 gen VFR and wanted to look into tank bags. A couple that I'm interested in are the Wolfman and the Eclipse - both have a 3-strap set up. I looked down the front of the tank and couldn't find an appropriate place to strap the front straps to. There must be some mounting points that I'm missing. Is there a tread with pics of mounting points?

 

Man if it was me I'd highly recommend getting a magnetic tank bag. I've tried a Held strap mount tank bag and just didn't like the overall fit on my 06. I couldn't find a secure place to mount the front straps. The held had two straps with the rubber coated brackets, that should have mounted under the lip on the edge of the tank. They mounted there, but never really felt secure. I purchased a medium sized Nelson-Rigg magnetic bag and just can't complain. If there's a better place to mount the straps I'm sure someone else on here will let us know.

 

Magnetic Tank Bag! Most of them come with straps to make them into a backpack. It is not a good idea to leave a magnetic tank bag on your bike when your not there. Thieves suck!

 

It sounds like magnetic is the way to go. A shame really since I really like Wolfman bags (which I've used on previous bikes) and I've heard good things about Eclipse.

 

Yeahh I would choose magnetic tank bags. I bought a Field sheer 4 stage tank bag last week. It comes in 3 sections, a map pad(this one have the magnets, 6 in total), a large backpack and a small bag. You zip all of it together or just use one of them. I used the large bag plus the map pad for the trip I did this week. Best $109.00 I spend so far.

I've got the Fieldsheer Contour with mag base. Really like the size; doesn't get in the way, and when expanded, it's got plenty of room. But, the front magnets are kinda big and pinch my thumb at full lock against the grip. So, I had the bright idea of cutting them off. Now, the bag doesn't feel secure enough. I'm thinking of getting the tail-bag conversion base for twenty bucks; anybody used this set-up? Sorry for the thread hi-jack.

 

Get off my thread Billbo! Just kidding.... for what its worth, I used a Wolfman tailbag on my CBR and that worked great!

 

I have a cortech tank bag. I works fine for around town but I've found that it gets light and wants to come off at speeds above 90 mph. I've since switched to a tail bag and like it better. If you decide to go with a tank bag I would get one that has a larger base and the biggest magnets you can find.

I mounted my Wolfman Explorer front straps by running a couple of heavy zip ties throught the existing hole in the gas tank front mount, right in between the mounting bolts. Run a little painters tape under the straps for paint protection and its a good setup.

 

I use a Held magnetic tank bag and love it. On a naked bike I had to use the included straps because the wind would lift it from the tank - which sucks at speed! On the VFR, it has stayed on with only the magnets up to 100 mph (on a track of course).

If I need to leave it on the bike in a relatively safe parking lot, I use a really small cable lock that has a coiled cable and a combination lock.

The lock is sort of like this, and it's easily small enough to fit in any small pocket.



Of course it could be easily cut, but then again so could straps....

 

Field Sheer stuff has nice big magnets. My bag is very low profile(just use for a glove compartment) so no wind problems. But nice big magnets.

I just mounted the RKA bag to my 99 VFR

Opening the fairing bits allowed access to the ignition coils of all things. The straps wrapped around without difficulty and hold the bag much better than when wrapped around the frame neck.

Hmmmm. Bags attached to the coils gives me a bad feeling. But the mounts seemed quite good for the application.

I use a Cortech 12 litre bag (magnetic). Seems secure if not overloaded. I take it with me (easy since I keep the wallet in there). I use a small retainer strap to keep it "honest."

 

Those are nice, but you could step up to one made by bagster and be really happy :bounce:

Rapid Transit Recon 19 Magnetic Tank Bag

 

I have a Joe Rocket Manta XL bag it fits the VFR really well and looks good. They actually use the vfr to display the bag on the website. I have never had trouble with it lifting up at all no matter what speed I was traveling! It has a lot of magnets that are spread out in all directions.

 

Someone said their Mag Bag converted into a backpack...Is that true for most of the new bags?...kinda seems like they all should but ya never know.
