It doesn't look like the gears/accessories threads get the views of some of the others but I figured I'd go ahead and give this a try.

I've been looking to add a couple of ram mount bases to my 2000 VFR. I've used the ram systems before and liked them very much. I also have a couple of arms and device cradles that I can use so there's not much sense letting all that go to waste.

It doesn't hurt Ram's cause, either, that some of the competitive systems are, shall we say, "cost prohibitive" and use velcro to attach devices.

At any rate, after tooling around the RAM site for a few days and not liking what I saw using the Motorcycle Wizard, I sent them an email for any ideas. Well, I was pretty turned off by the fact that they just forwarded my email on to a couple of dealers and had them contact me, but I did have one company that was actually pretty helpful. Yo could tell they read the email and had some suggestions for me trather than just giving me a link to their site.

What they guy suggested - and what he claims to have installed on HIS VFR - is the B342 Steering Stem Mount http://www.whitehorsepress.com/product_info.php?products_id=5784 and the B272U mount that uses a slightly longer pinch bolt than stock. http://www.whitehorsepress.com/workbench.php?workbench_id=16&products_id=4947

My dilemma is, as simple as the instructions are, I'll be damned if I know how they got the stem mount to work without a LOT of modification to the mount and after an hour at Lowe's and another hour online, I can't seem to find anything that is comparable to the pinch bolt on my handlebars that's a bit longer.

Has anyone tried either of these two solutions and gotten them attached? Has anyone used this company before? They sound very trustworthy but things are looking kind bleak right now.

    Thanks!

    Yom

My guess is that theres a rubber piece on the bottom that expands as you tighten the bolt.

    Ram Mount install

    Thanks for the comments guys.

As it turns out, the fellow at the company I bought these parts from was extremely helpful but to get the stem mount to work, the final suggestion was to wrap "rubber" tape around the bottom piece to get it snug in the stem. Then, as Slacker mentioned, the bottom expands as you tighten the bolt down.

That's fine, I guess, but I still don't get why the specs say that it fits a 19mm stem hole when it doesn't, and why, if these guys had one on a VFR as they claimed, why they didn't mention having to make modifications. Ah well. That's life with mail order. I haven't had time to mess with either the stem mount or the other piece yet. There's too much riding to be done and I need to get the new rubber on. Priorities yanno?

How did you end up getting your stem mount attached Dan? I'd love to see pics if it isn't too much trouble?

    Thanks again!

I went with one ball on the forward gas tank mount. Then, if I wanted additional mount points I'd grow off that. It's less stuff to move with the front end.

I've been happy with the Ram stuff so far.

I set my GPS mount up the same as Nozzle - I took a couple of pics of it. The nice thing about that mounting method is that the GPS doesn't turn with the bars. The part I used is this: Whitehorse Gear - RAM Mount: U-Bolt Base

It comes with a few bolts, two of which thread in to replace the originals at the tank mount. I had to shorten them a bit with a hacksaw, but otherwise it bolted right up. I have the short RAM arm on it right now - I'm going to get a longer one so I don't have to look down as much to see the GPS.
