    Hi All,

Just logged in and registered with the site. I have an 85 VF500 I just bought. I'm not new to riding on dirt, but new to the street scene. I have read many things about this particular bike and may have a few questions for the experts of 1st gen VF bikes. Here is a pic of when I brought it home. I haven't ridden it on the street, only in the yard. I think the plugs need replacing. I might have fouled them by putting around. It didn't start the last time I turned her over. I hope that is all that is wrong. I will check the plugs tomorrow. I have read that the bike is perfect for a beginner like me, but hard to fix on.

    Thanx,
    D

Well, if you need any parts. I just started parting mine out unfortunately. Our bikes are twins. Your bike is in just about the same condition I got mine in.

Oh and the stock plugs are NGK DPR8EA-9s.

Welcome D money! I would do as you are going to and replace those spark plugs. Make sure to put some fresh oil in her, and check obvious things such as the battery, chain/sprockets, tire wear/age, fork seals for leakage, appearance of the coolant, etc.

Thanks Viff, I will keep you in mind if I need anything. Your bike looks nice what happened to it? I hate to hear u r parting it out.

Thanks for teh welcome derstuka! I will put ur recommendations on the list.

I will give an update on todays discoveries here, but after this, I will post in the proper area for progress on the project.

Today I pulled the wires, not the plugs, yet. I found they have fire. I think my fuel pump is bad. It hums but no gas.
I pulled the hose from the carbs to the pump and left it hanging, with the petcock in the on position, then I hit the start, and no gas! I think the pump is somehow clogged/vacuum issue or just bad. That is where i am now, have to go to work :(
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I am just chompin at the bit to get her on the road!

    Thanx,
    D

Update. Went back out and checked the gas pump. That is what was humming. I think it may be bad. It wasn't the ignition box. duh.
    Thanx,
    D

Yeah, you're right, when you hit the starter with the line from the fuel pump disconnected from the carbs you should see fuel flow in squirts the whole time you're pressing the starter.

I would however check FIRST that your vacuum valve on your petcock is working and verify that that your tank is in the on or reserve position.

Disconnect the the part of the fuel line that comes pre filter, so it should be Tank>Petcock>Fuel Line>Open Air. (Fuel filter is not connected).

Disconnect the black vaccum line comes from the petcock and goes to the engine from the engine side. Suck on the vacuum line with your mouth (if you listen closely you can hear the valve opening, at which point you can pinch the line with your fingers to keep the valve open). Fuel should dribble/stream out. If not, your petcock is bust.

If you find out that it is infact your pump is shot....just so happens, I have an auction for a fuel pump already going.

    eBay Motors: 1985 VF 500 VF500 VF500F Interceptor Fuel Pump / Filter (item 320252934591 end time May-23-08 00:40:04 PDT)

May also want to invest in a spare R/R, as these bikes have a habit of blowing them if used to charge a discharged, damaged or poorly maintained battery.
