    That hurts.

Well, start with the basics. Fuel, air & spark. Any other noises?

Welcome to the fray! Is this your first bike? Just starting with some basics. I may be totally off base but here goes anyhoo. These bikes are very cold blooded so they wont start that well if you have the throttle open more than part way open when you crank it. (That seems to go for any Honda I have ever owned.) Try this - bike dead cold. (-6th gen have a choke?)
Apply choke if you have one. Kick everthing on and just barely crack the thottle open. Crank it for about 5-6 seconds and then stop. Now- no throttle at all, crank it and it should come to life. Let it spittle, piss and moan a minute - it will be like its woke from the dead. Then eke open some throttle till it seems to accept that your serious, yes, you fricken bike I want you to run. Gradually add even more throttle till you can blip it and then let it settle down into a fast idle. Thats it - like I said, Honda's are cold blooded beasts, a little finese will go a long way.

    Good luck,
    MD

The 06's have an automatic choke. I presume all 6th gen do also but I don't know this for sure.

Sounds like what happens to mine if i let it sit all winter without starting it. i usually have to start it half a dozen times, each time it runs a little longer but the first couple times it will only run while the start button is pushed. Then it runs really shitty for a while till it gets warmed up.

    HERE IS YOUR FIX:

Have the wiring harness recall done. I can almost guarantee you, that if you listen closely to the dash when you turn the key on, you will hear a buzzing noise.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IF YOU WANT TO RIDE RIGHT AWAY:

Pull the left side fairing off the bike. Find the large blue connector next to the large gray connector under the clear rubber shroud, near the top of the fairing.

Find the green wire that goes in one side & out the other. This is the ground wire for your front sub harness. Clip the wires on both sides of the connector, and install a jumper wire(to bypass the blue connector).

The reason for this, is that the connection of the green wires inside the blue connector gets hot and shorts out.

Honda will replace both of your harnesses, the front and the main, under the recall.

    So to sum it up:
No Gas / bad gas / bad fuel filter?
    Kill switch/ not in neutral
    Rat in air filter
Ground wire fault / recall needs done

Not necessarily saying Seb's idea is a bad one, but before you start cutting wires call your local Honda dealer. They can search the database for your VIN to see if the wiring recall has been done. You might also check the linked brake recall while you're at it.

Yes, they will do it for free. And since they consider it a safety recall it doesn't expire.

Truth is I didn't know anything about it till I read it here a couple months ago. I think the recall is actually a couple years old. Apparently a proportioning vavle in the linked system that operates the rear brake when the fronts are pulled has a tendency to spring a leak. (I think that's right.) The invoice I got from the dealer says "Inspect Brake Pllunger".
