So I do a nice coolant flush and fill on the VFR .... its mid summer ... its been really hot here in New England. I am feeling extra special about crossing through the 20k barrier on my 23 year old machine. She is fit, she runs awesome, and I take a toodle to run the air out of the coolant system ... just a little 5 mile jaunt to heat her up so the thermostat opens and she gulps fresh coolant.

I am shifting sweet smooth strokes 1st .... 2nd ...................3rd ........ short shift 4th because of oncoming traffic light .... its dusk ... a cool evening and *** .. POP .. *** Was that heat on my butt ??

Lights go out, motor gurgles to 0 RPM .... coast to a stop !! Into the country club parking lot ... ???? fuse?? ,,, engine bonked ??? WTF

Meanwhile ... back in the garage after a midnight "rope-tow" home. (Another story)

    Battery check with VOM
hmmmm whats that smell ??? electronics burning !!

two 10mm bolts later I look at the soft underbelly of my R/R cracked and ooooozing a black puss .... can you say PCB's??

So why is it our 1st GEN VFR seemed to have such a HIGH R/R casualty rate ... is it just father time? or heat cold in New England !!

Well parts bike donates more of its organs ... (my husbands VFR750 project bike)

and we are back on the road !! but in need of a R/R for the works VFR750 ... whats the current conventional wisdom ??? a Ricks aftermarket R/R .... eBay smack ?? or Frankenstein a R/R from another breed .. I read in the forum that the Suzuki GXR will work ....

    Sally:

I vote for the Rick's RR. Very good quality and resonably priced through dennis-kirk.com.

Second, search the threads for the inline wire fuse mod to the battery terminals and battery ground. I did this mod on the 97 a few years ago and never had had problems since. Charges at 14.6 at revs like a charm.

    Peace,

    BZ

I was reading some stuff about the charging issues and some of the things people recommend are:

-Take the two green wires from the Rectifier and Grounding them straight to the frame
-Adding a cooling fan to the Rectifier
-Adding a 2nd ground to the main harness.

Bubba has some good ideas there too.
