    Hello,

Does anyone have experience with washable/reusable oil filters? I am thinking of getting one. Looking for input...

Air filter perhaps - but oil filter? Why?

If you often ride your VFR in a very dusty area, the ability to quickly remove and washout and unclog an air filter could be a worthwhile investment - and I think a few firms are out there already offering aftermarket options (K&N?).

However I am not sure how successful you could be trying to wash out contaminants from a used oil filter - without creating far more contaminated waste to dispose of that just a standard oil filter and canister of waste oil. Certainly in Europe genuine Honda oil filters can be picked up quite cheaply, personally I would not take the risk trying to reuse an oil filter. Finally there is the issue of trying to reuse the O ring seal on the filter - the last thing you want is to end up spewing oil all over your rear tyre (tire). I recall that during one of her longer VFR trips Anne Marie had major issues when an aftermarket K&N oil filter started leaking on her 6th Gen.

A member here used the Scotts and always thought it was economical over time. Check it out...

oil filters are cheap engines are not. Stick with a quality spin on oil filter. Its all about the microns man. Would you run retreaded tires? Also recommend sticking a neodymium magnet on the end of the filter to catch any metal.

Due to the bypass valves in spin on oil filters, you will always have some unfiltered oil going through your engine. This typically takes place at startup, especially if you live in a cold climates. It can also take place under hard acceleration. The typical bypass valve pressure setting for an OEM Honda filter has been reported to be 12 - 14 psi. Needless to say, your engine oil isn't filtered 100% of the time. I have used both types, but I also think it's equally important to change your oil at the recommended interval, whether you choose to use 3k, 5k, some oil manufacturers even report change intervals up to 10k miles, it's all up to what you feel the most comfortable with.

well the scotts filter is 139.00 which is high initially, and they say it filters to 35 microns. amsoil filters filter to 20 microns. i am not willing to send that oil through my motor over and over. it may go through at high acceleration but eventually (shortly) will go through the filter. just my 2 cents

they are called frantz filters. You can still buy them today....apparently filters to two microns. Looks a little bulky for the bike though.

Going with that price you'll break even at around 85,000 miles. Of course that isn't figuring in the cleaning solvent you'll need
to clean that sucker, so may be closer to 100,000 miles. Uh, I think I'll give it a pass.

I believe they are better suited to offroad machines, as you change the oil more often. At least that's what I used them for.

Yeah, that would make a bit more sense if you rode a lot. I worked on my grandson's 550 KTM and the oil change
interval is like 3-4 hours running time, and it has 2 filters, but only has about 2 quarts of oil. Pretty crazy.
