I've lost both my keys within months of each other. Well one was lost, and the second one was stolen (doubt the thief knows where the bike is).
I have since contacted the dealer with whom I purchased the bike from (Temple City powersports in california) and they gave me some run around about changing ownership and not having the key code.

    WHAT DO I DO?

I did some initial web searching and found only guides on replicating with an existing key.
The local dealership told me I can order all the key required parts for around $450 and replace it myself... but they weren't sure about the programming aspect. I'm not sure I'll be able to deal with the programming of them without replacing the ECU and that part worries me, nor were there guides on that I could find. One forum said it would cost "thousands", but the poster didn't exactly have any specifics.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also please don't respond with "well you should have ___" or "it was dumb to not have _____". I know I'm an idiot and already realize the blatant errors of my ways, but hindsight isn't going to get me back on two wheels.

What year is your bike? Does your key require programming? I have a 2014 & a 1983 and neither one requires programming.

I would go back to the dealer you bought it from and talk to someone higher up. Let them you let others know how poorly you are being treated,

Does your bike have the HISS security system? If so you need one "programmed" key to enable subsequent replacement keys to be accepted by the ECU. If not...apparently you need a new ECU (and deep pockets).

I've got a 2015 deluxe and there is no HISS, so hopefully you are off the hook for the ECU.

Suggest you call or submit a web inquiry with your vin directly to Honda powersports. My local "dealers" make little effort in general, and have very little specific knowledge. However, I have contacted Honda directly several times through the web portal and been called back by very well informed Honda staff every time.

Good luck and keep us updated. You won't be the only one, I'm sure. Honda contact info I used below:

In Europe all 8th gen have HISS but some North American models do not. It is obvious if it is fitted to your VFR as the word HISS is on the key barrel.

If it is a non HISS VFR then hopefully a decent locksmith can help.

If it is HISS you should redouble you efforts to find that missing key as the cost of sorting it out via Honda will be expensive

If you do find that missing key then make it your top prority to get extra copies programmed asap and also delete the stolen key from the ECU - your ECU can allow up to 4 coded keys. This video shows how you can code extra keys...

    Good luck with the search.
