Hello everyone i just got a vfr as a project bike. its a 2000. Im having trouble trying to figure out why it wont start. The starter cranks but  The fuel pump does not come on, and none of the the spark plugs spark. So far what i noticed is the ignition coils do get 12 v positive but no ground. the fuel pump relay and engine cut relay also get 12v positive but no ground. ive checked all my switches ie. engine cut off, side stand, neutral, clutch....... they all seem to send ground when needed. Im begining to think its my ECM. Any help will be apreciated, Thanks!

    Hello Prince 043

It sounds like you have a bad ground connection. First check all ground connections by gently wiggling wires/components until you pinpoint the bad connection. Also clean the battery connections thourougly.

If that does not work you will actually have to troubleshoot the electrical system. In order to troubleshoot this you are going to need the electrical system schematics, Service Manual, and a Digital Voltmeter DVM with a High Input Inpedance. Do not attempt to use a small cheapy analog meter or cheap test probe. You can actually overload the circuits and blow up electronics.

Also DO NOT replace the ECM. These things practically NEVER fail. That's call parts replacing, not troubleshooting. You have to be able to read the ECM fault codes to pin down the problems associated with ECM Good luck and if you get totally stuck, take the bike to a qualified service tech. This bike still has years of good service left if you correct the problem:smile:

thanks for the fast reply, okay so ive gone over all the ground conections and there all good. I do have the manual, the schematics and i have a fluke digital meter. ive traced the two g/p ground wires to the ecm, side stand switch...... there all fine. ive also done a peak voltage test to all the coils and they are not getting anything. there was something funny that i did notice. the bwn/blk wire from the ecm to the fuel pump relay with the ignition in the off pos. sends ground. But when the ignition switch is in the on pos. it has nothing. from what i can tell from the schematics the two blk/ white wires get 12v positive when the ignition is on, and they do. but that brown black should read 12v negative with ignition on in order to energize the realay coil, by then closing the contacts and sending the fuel pump 12v positive. just strange that its doing the opposite. maybe im missing something here. im about to give up soon and just take it to the dealer. Im begining to question my skill, been and electronics engineer designing audio circuits for 5 years, this is begining to hurt my ego hahahahha.....
