Took the 700 out for a second ride. After a few miles, it stared "popping" out the exhaust-- on acceleration. Not all the time, just on a good roll-on.

What causes it and how can I fix it? I'm dying to ride but not when it's doing this.

    Thanks,
    Rob

sounds like it is running rich or has a miss fire, that popping sound is usually unburnt fuel being ignited by a hot exaust

Please don't start a second thread about your carbs not working properly until you have resolved the first one--until you fix the problem we don't need to hear about every time you try to ride that it's not working.

Well, I read somewhere that an exhaust leak could cause the problem. One of the slip-ons was loose, the PO did a poor job of mounting them. There was a crease in the bell due to using the wrong clamp.

I cut two more slots in the pipe and used a proper exhaust clamp. Took it for a 30 mile ride and the popping was gone. Like "rjgti " said, it might be rich and the added air in the exhaust might have cause the popping.

I can't say the problem is solved do to it possibly being rich. I mean who knows, maybe the carbs clean up with the added miles.

On a related note, When I bought it, I failed to notice that one of the header pipes is crushed. It's lost almost 50% of it's cross section. It looks like the damage is old and the PO probably road it that way but could it cause damage or how could it affect performance? Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Rob

anytime you restrict a header pipe you cause a flow problem. the header pipe has to be replaced

Can the header pipes be removed from the collector or do I have to find a complete unit?

You should have no problem finding a used one from a salvage yard.
