vfr700 stator test

    hello
    I have an 86 vfr700. I tested the stator with a voltmeter running and got around 20 volts at idle and up to about 140 volts around 7000. By what I was reading I should have gotten around 6 at idle and up to 60 with the bike revving any advice would be well appreciated

    Is that open circuit voltage, or voltage with a load (the regulator) on it? Probably makes a big difference.

    Check your connectors between stator and regulator. Mine were fried. This ought to be a solder connection for such high-current wires.

    Yes...you should be isolating, or unplugging the stator when testing. Also you are testing ACV? And a series of three tests? Usually if the stator is failed you'll see a very low reading on one or more of the phases.

    About 99% of the stators I've seen fail (that would be many) do so by shorting to ground. That's the most definitive test. If it passes that, and the three yellows have a low resistance between them...usually around .6 ohms and I still suspect a stator problem, then I may do an AC output test. I usually look for over 70VAC at 5000RPM.

    I checked and the stator wasn't grounded out. Then the honda service manual said that disconecting the stator and testing resistance (ohms) should give .3 to .5 ohms. I believeSorry I was getting .7 to .9. After letting the bike warm up i disconected the stators three wires from the r/r and tested voltage between the three yellow wires . That was what i first posted about . As far as my connections go none where fried and where very clean inside. Today I took the r/r off and found where some of the plastic had cracked and a small spot where solder had melted out.
