I have an 96 VFR 750. I just replaced the 4 year old battery because it didn't seen to be holding a charge. Now the new battery is showing the same symptoms. Some times it has a herd time turning the started and just dies. I've had the new battery for 4 days about. I used a volt meter to check voltage going back to the battery while the bike is running and it appeared to be fine. I'll check the battery connections to see if they are loose. The bike has about 23,000 miles. Still reletavely fresh for VFR's Has anyone else had a similar issue and what solved it? Thanks, bikermike PS: I am also looking for a shop manual, owners manual and bike specific tools like chain adjuster wrench.
I believe those are the same symptoms reported in an R/R failure. There was a thread about it a couple months ago... try this thread, there are lots of suggestions in it: http://vfrworld.com/forums/mechanics-garage/3919-losing-power-off-help.html?highlight=charging
Reg would be correct in that this could be a regulator/rectifier failure. Fully charge your battery. Then start the bike. With your trusty digital multi meter (set on V ~20), place the test leads on the appropriate battery posts. Then rev the engine to about 5000 rpm. You should get a reading of 14 - 15 volts. If yuo get a different reading, replace the r/r. Also, make sure there are no corroded connections as this can cause problems as well after the r/r has been replaced. For the shop and owners, manual. Helm Inc should have both, but the service manual pops up on ebnay from time to time. The cain adjustment tool can be obtained thru bikebandit.com andprobably for less than the dealer will sell it to you.
PDF service manual's free: http://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=41567 It takes a while to down load, but it worked, and now I have a manual!
