    Hi Garry

I should of course start by extending a formal welcome to the MadHouse:welcome:

Assuming we can discount the usual - knocked the engine run cut-off switch and such like - it would help us, if you can provide a bit more information - chances are you are seeing/hearing stuff which might help diagnose what is going on. Is there any chance you can post up a video showing what is (not) happening when you try to start the bike. The easiest solution would be to upload a video to YouTube.

You don't say how long you have had the bike or whether this is a sudden/new problem or the bike has been left for years and you are now trying to get her back to life. The more information you can provide the better chance we will have of being able to point towards possible causes/or likely solutions.

I assume you know that normally the FI light should light up as part of the start up process but then go out. If it flashes then it probably means the PGMFI system has a stored fault code which may be the key to whatever is wrong. Have a look at this video - Reading Fuel Injection Error codes on a VFR800 - YouTube
and see if that sheds some light on things.

Let us know how you get on.

PS When you get a chance mosey on over to the introductions thread and post up a bit about you and some pictures of your VFR.

Right, so my first thoughts were completely wrong... Which points towards either the charging system and well documented RR/stator/flat battery issues ( search for posts by Rubo) - or more likely a fault with the alarm/immobiliser system - which, give it its due, is indeed leaving the bike immobilised!

The bike is too early for the full Honda HISS system so I assume the bike is fitted with some sort of add on unit like a datatool immobiliser. (All such systems are pretty much spawn of the devil and can cause endless grief to owners, but won't stop a determined thief.)

Anyway you need to dig out the paperwork which came with the bike and read through until you find the fault finding guide for the alarm system. Hopefully that will allow you to sort out what is wrong - it could be as simple as the battery on the bike, or inside the alarm or key Fob has drained and needs replacement.

If you can't locate the paperwork then try the web/call the manufacturer. However most firms will only supply information to a person who is the officially recorded owner/keeper - so you may have a bit of an issue until DVLA turns up with paperwork to show you as the new owner.

Sadly most modern systems do not have a manual(key) override allowing you to turn the damn thing off if it starts misbehaving, but its worth locating the unit and seeing if there is any sign of a key slot which will at least allow you to get the bike working whilst you figure out what is wrong with the alarm.

If all that fails - then the only solution will be to call in an installer who knows that make/model of alarm. Sadly these things tend to be all computer chips with nothing to fix so you may find the cheapest fix is to get the alarm specialist to completely replace the old unit. On the face of it, if the battery is in good health then its probably not the bike which is causing the problem - just the aftermarket alarm.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. Let us know how you get on.
