Can i adjust the resting position of the shifter on a 85 VF500? I would like the shifter to be a little bit closer to the ground relative to the foot peg.

I just got a '85 VF500, the bike is a decent fit for me, but I have a little trouble pushing up on the shifter (tight calfs & heel). I tried losening the bolt that holds it on a shaft (red circle in image) but i couldn't get it to pop off so i could rotate it a couple notche's counter clockwise. Would it be better to shorten the connecting rod (green circles in image) by adjusting the nuts, or getting a shorter rod?

You can change the position either by adjusting the threaded rod or by turning the connection on the engine one or 2 splines after removing the bolt and fitting (red circle)

Looking closely at your photo again, try moving the fitting about 2 splines counterclockwise and try that, and don't change the threaded rod(green circle) at all.

I had to completely remove the bolt to get that bracket off. Its not just clamped on mine. There is an open spot inside the bracket and a grove in the spline shaft.

Thanks guys, once i took off the bolt i used my wrench to coax it out a bit, once it was only touching one of the sets of splines i was able to just wiggle it loose with the shifter, can't wait to ride it again and shift with ease!
