So i'm cruising along the highway and notice a sudden lose of power, i'm still rolling, but the bike is noticeably weaker. After one shop (coincidentally near by) said it was the old fuel pump, i take the bike to the shop down the road and they confirm my suspicions, that it's a valve problem in one of the cylinders.

Is is worth the time to take everything apart and fix it up, or should i just part out the rest of the 85 vf500??

I just started ridding, and it served it's purpose as an inexpensive first bike incase i just drove into a ditch. The guy at the shop was saying that if one valve has a problem i might open up the engine and find a whole lot more problems so he said replacing the whole engine would be the only option that made sense if i had another vf500 engine that was in good working order.

Thoughts? Anyone have a 500 engine? Anyone want to take the bike off my hands for parts?

If you had really dropped a valve, the noise would be horrific and the engine would lock up immediately, so you need to investigate further. I'd suggest checking for spark on all cylinders, next checking compression, then valve clearances. You can pretty much rule out finding a good, used engine imo.

dropping a valve is not uncommon in that engine. Pulling the valve covers would confirm rather quickly.

I agree, a cheap donor engine is the only sensible financial option for your goal. Otherwise part it out and step up to a newer V4

Thanks guys, i think i'm just going to sell it off as a parts bike, or part it out for a couple of high value parts then give away what's left.

I managed to snag an end of season '98 CBR600 at a good price. I appreciate the help i got from the forums, but a newer VFR just wasn't in the cards.
