Does a Staintune NEED a Power Commander?

Hi all. I'm buying a 5th gen in the next 3 months. I want to know if you think it's better to buy a stocker and then do a pipe, such as a Staintune high mount myself, or try to find a bike with one already fitted? If I buy a bike with one fitted, does it NEED to have A PC fitted as well? If so, what problems etc might I run into if the PC is not fitted.

    TIA, Will

    Hi Winaje,

first up - great choice on the 5th Gen but I'm unashamedly biased! Pro's and cons with your question. If you can find a stocker you've got the option of buying the can that you want. Downside is your going to have the extra cost of the can along with the bikes sale price.

The alternative - bike already with the aftermarket can - is just the reverse of the above. So unless you have a hankering for a particular brand, buying a bike with an aftermarket can already fitted could be the go.

I found that I had no problems with my aftermarket can stuffing up things. If down the track you decide to go with an aftermarket air filter I still think you safe. I'm looking to get a PCIII to help minimise the 5Krpm hole in the power curve and compensate for some work I'm doing on the headers.

Let us know how you go with the bike and as always - post some pics when your able to!

BTW - there was a cherry 01 5th gen down at the local dealer with only 13500 km on it a few weeks back!

    Cheers,

Hi Skid. Are you talking about the red '01 at Canberra Motorcycle Centre (CMC)? It's a really nice looking bike, but seems to be about 1k too much...

Thanks for the info. There is a really nice blue one at my local dealer, it's just under 10k. It's been there for a few months, so I'm not sure if there is something wrong with it, or if it's just not been noticed.

On a side note, do you head past CMC much?

    Probably hasn't been spotted yet.

My '00 had a Staintune already fitted when I bought it, no Power Commander. I haven't had any problems.

Thank you to all for your replies. I have changed to the dark side; I pick up a 2005 6th Gen with 2000 miles on the clock and Madaz pipes on Thursday...

    Very Very Red.

There is a mid quality photo of the pipes and the rear of the bike under Members Galleries/Winaje.
