Well I seem to be having trouble with my thermostat not closing. Has anyone else had this problem? I have had thermostats fail in the closed position before but never in the open. So I am wondering if there may be some other issue. I am not too inclined to do a strip down until I have a few more clues. The bike is a 2005.

Thermostats can fail closed, open, or anywhere in between.

Let me guess - your bike is taking forever to come up to temperature, and your fuel economy sucks...

That pretty much covers it. Trouble is at the moment it only sticks most of the time.

Yes! That's exactly what my problem is. Suggestions for how to fix it? And is it a difficult repair?

Hey guys. Had my thermostat sticking in the open position. Bike would run around 145 degrees on these cold nights. Fuel mileage went from 50+ down to high 30's. Put a new thermostat in and bike runs like a champ! The repair is not hard, just very time consuming. You have to remove the gas tank, air box, and throttle bodies to get to it. I had mine replaced when my bike was in for it's 32K valve service.
