Hey I've been a lurker for a while now. I have a 2002 VFR, and it won't heat to optimum heat unless it's at low speeds or sitting in traffic. I've only had it for a month now, so I haven't experienced how it reacts in hot weather.

Anyway, when riding on the highway at 70+ (weather is about 40 degrees), the water temperature drops to about 145-150 and just hovers there. If the air temperature is colder, the average water temperature is a bit lower. I know this is affecting my mileage, as well as probably wearing the engine more than it would otherwise.

Does anyone know what would cause this and how to fix it?

    bad thermostat:

you need to get familiar with the "thermostat replacement" threads.....

this problem is excessively common with fuel-injection VFRs for reasons still unexplained....
