Hey guys, it’s been a while since I been here on the forums, I have tried to come back and post but real life has been keeping me away if you didn’t know my wife battling cancer was the reason for my absence she has since been in full Remission and is currently a full time college student and has been doing well and I have had 2 major jaw surgeries and had to fight through 6 blood clots 2 in my ankle one in my knee and 3 in my lung so I have had set backs but I have never stopped riding I moved From Lemoore Ca to San Diego and let me tell you the extra stress on the 86 was really getting to me, I never upgraded my suspension and it needed it
I lived on this forum when I did my 86 rebuild and you guys were my life line, with your help I brought an 86 from the ready to scrap yard to a daily rider and she served me well. My 86 is alive and well but she no longer belongs to me, I sold her to a friend who fell in love with her the moment he saw her (back to that later), I upgraded to a 99 one owner VFR that was a commuter's bike, the guy I bought it from is a Harley guy now but used the VFR as his daily rider( should tell you something if you got 4 Harley’s in the garage but ride a VFR as the daily) he commuted on the VFR for seven years and bought a Harley and the VFR was no longer the apple of his eye but just taking up space in the garage, long story short him and the wife was expecting and she wanted a baby room so one of the bikes had to go, so he decided to sell the best bike in his stable the VFR, but there is a twist, I had been looking for a VFR for my budget and was coming up short on options, so this one popped on criags list late the night I was about to give up looking, I called the guy and there was someone on his was from northern California to look at it. Now I’m not stupid you don’t come from up north to down south just to look at a VFR a 99 at that so I knew he was coming to buy, I asked the guy where he lived and he was 1 exit off the highway past my house, I’m like are you kidding right under my nose, I ask if I can come see it and he was like sure but he had a guy on the way, I went but I took my tablet with all the pictures from the 86 build my plan was to get him to like me, show him I was a VFR lover and I would treat this bike right, needless to say it worked and I got my much needed Up grade. (Sorry up North guy if your part of this forum)
That is the reason I’m switching forums I’m trying to learn from the 5th Gen guys now, But back to the story of the 86, when I moved to San Diego this was my 1st time living in a city with this kind of traffic, the hills all with the original suspension then add all the new riding potential, I want to actually tour some now and the 86 even with upgrades couldn’t do what I want to get into so I had to make a decision, use the money for upgrades or try to find a newer bike with the upgrade money before I sank it into the old bike, and I found a major upgrade. My 86 was just sitting there in the garage and my new riding buddy Jose saw and loved the 86 and he would rather ride her than His Kawasaki, he had a place for her in his garage, had the knowledge of how to work on her already and he had already started collecting upgrades before I even told him I was willing to sell her so I let her go, and after the 1st day he had her he completely turned her into his bike, I didn’t even know you could find some the stuff he found brand new still, but she has a good home, I actually ride beside or behind her on the weekends, he likes to tell me it’s not his bike it’s our bike, he wouldn’t have her if I hadn’t rescued her from a guaranteed death.
I’m love my 99, had her 9 months now and she has been great, I’m still making her mine she needs some work but all bolt on stuff, new seat cover, braided wires, pipe, the usual suspects. But that tale needs to be told with a new group so I’m going to move it over there. Thanks for all help, advice and parts that were sent my way, I’m still part of the family just moving over to meet my new cousins. Be good guys talk to you all later.

Congrats on you & your wife recovering from your respective medical conditions. Cancer is no easy foe. As for the Harley guy selling the VFR, it makes perfect sense. With a newborn free time is very limited. So he got rid of the bike he spent the most time on.

I wasn't around during your 86 rebuild but let me say welcome back!

Curry- first of all, best to your wife, hope she's in permanent remission. Secondly, why move to a different forum? There are plenty of guys with 5th gens here, and a ton of knowledge. Good luck to ya, and if you get stuck on anything on your bike, we are only a few clicks away.

rbednar that actually hit me when I was refreshing myself with the page, I asked myself why leave the guys I'm already comfortable with, I'm not going anywhere, staying right here, got to stay where the real mechanics are. I'm slow man forgive me.

    welcome back.

    :worthless:

My wife had her battle with cancer, too but she's been cancer free for several years. Hopefully both of ours will stay healthy from now on.

Hopefully we will see you up in the central coast sometime soon. Everyone knows that's where the best riding is.

crusty I missed ya man, haven't talked to you since the 86 build, I sold her to a buddy but she was just here last night to show off new cables, I need to post some updated pictures of her. I'm back man trolling the forums daily, it's back in my normal website rotation.
