Picked up a new 99 VFR a few months ago and there is a pretty decent size dent right on the top of the fuel tank right near the fuel cap. The previous owner said the bike was dropped in his garage which caused minor scratches to the fairing but he does not know how the top dent on the tank got there from another previous owner.

Theres no scratches at all in the paint ont he tank just a big dent, how could this have gotten there? Something fall on it maybe?

Did the previous owner have a tank bag? It's a stretch, but I know dents and scratches have resulted from using a tank bag. Also, I have had a motorcycle dented in my garage before from a shovel falling off the wall rack. The rack gave way and the shovel hit the exhaust, so it is definitely possible. Have you looked into whether that dent can be pulled out?

I was thinking that lots of people got dents from tank bags. Those magnets are quite strong and if you are not careful attaching a tank bag, yet you can dent it. But not like that. I tend to agree with Scubalong that it is consistent with a helmet being dropped on it. I think Stewart is onto something in that you may be able to pull that out with some sort of suction cup.

I have seen a similar dent pounded out of the rear corner of a truck cab by a body man using just a hammer like tool. (definitely not a hammer though). Turned out really good, but he had talents greater than mine.

The tank was off the bike and sitting on the floor, for maintenance purposes. Little Peggy, who was not really that little, stepped on it while trying to reach the cookie jar on the top shelf. The poor tank didn't have a chance. It's really elementary, my dear Watson.

Check and see if there is a local company that does Painltess Dent Repair. They might be able to glue pull the dent from the outside if it is not too deep or badly creased. Failing that they might be able to repair the dent from the back side using tools if you can remove the fuel injection pump assembly from the bottom and bring the PDR company just the tank. The hole in the back of the tank should be large enough to give a PDR company access the dent. As long as there is no paint damage you would be surprised what can be repaired. If you're not sure of what company to use just check with a local car dealer and see if they use a particular company to repair their used cars and whether or not they could recommend someone. If I lived a bit closer, I'd be willing to attempt the repair myself. Though the dent does appear a bit large in the photo, it should be repairable.

I am much better at making dents then fixing them...... but the old wet toilet plunger may work from the outside. This worked pretty well on old car doors. Also you could find something or make something "J" shaped and try to push it out from the inside by inserting this in through the gas filler hole. Maybe copper tubing or conduit bent to meet your needs? Cover the end with a lot of duct tape or a small rubber ball?

Maybe seal the tank and use air pressure?

    Just Thinkin'.

Yeah, hate to admit it though, cause there are those on the site that get a bit testy if you advertise for your own industry. Won't mention any names though.
