I really want to remove the "Interceptor" decals from my rear fairings. They're on there pretty good. Does anyone have a savy suggestion for removing these without any adverse effects to my paint?

    Thanks:biggrin:

Hair dryer and a plastic scraping tool. After you get the sticker off you can use WD-40 or Goo-Gone to remove the leftover residue.

I'll consider the hair dryer but a plastic scraping tool sounds like it will scratch my paint job.

What he said, I took mine off as soon as I brought the bike home. Once you lift a corner the decal peels right off.

The whole reason for using the plastic tool insted of a razor balde is because it will not scratch the paint :)

I use a small plastic spackle tool to lift the corner once the decal has been heated up. Once you do that you can just peel the sticker away after warming it properly.

I just peeled mine off. There were a couple of spots of glue left so I used some goo gone and it came right off.

A hair dryer works fine. Get one edge of the decal warm keeping the heat on the frontside of the decal. This keeps the adhesive warm. Slowly move the hair dryer air stream in the same direction as you are peeling off the decal.

IMO, no scraping or tools other than the hair dryer and using your hands is necessary.

If your paintjob is factory it is clearcoated. Both the paint and the clearcoat are catalyzed coatings and are durable and tough.

I am a little hinky about some of these solvents that contain limonene. In concentrated amounts they are used to kill bugs, are known carcinogens, and have been found toxic to small mammals and pertaining to this use, limonene is a paint stripper.

    Why take a chance?

Best bet to remove residual adhesive of the type used to adhere decals IMO, is plain old paint thinner aka stoddard solvent.

1.) Heat the decal with a hair dryer.
2.) Peel the whole thing off by hand.
3.) Use WD-40 to remove any sticky residue.

This technique works for any decal or sticker.

DO NOT USE A SCRAPING TOOL OF ANY SORT! IT WILL SCRATCH YOUR PAINT.

The hair dryer worked as described. There was plenty of gummy residue left. WD40 and some elbow grease took care of that.

Thank you all for weighing in on this!

the decals on your tank are more than likely clear coated over and you do not want to remove them unless you plan on repainting the tank.

Yes, I know. See winking smiley. I was poking fun at VT Viffer's claim that "This technique works for any decal or sticker.". I guess I'm not that funny.
