So, in the spring I set the valves cold and balls on.
Rebuilt the carbs taking care to set the float height as per manual...
warmed it up and synched them right on, installed iridium plugs and it started and ran like a champ for quite a while .

Now it is real hard to start in the morning or after a 12 hour shift but once started and warm it runs better than ever.

My question is why won't it start properly and why would it run so good once started ??

I have pulled the plugs and looked at them they are clean with a light pinkish tan colour.
I dont know where to start looking now I just want it to start like it did before.

All my bikes are cold-blooded beasts that snort and balk until they get their warming paces run through.
Just a reality of owning an old bike, they run like tops once they warm up after a few blocks.

You might want to look at using normal Nippon Denso's or NGK's- people have had mixed results with using Iridium plugs on their motorcycles.

You need to clean the enrichment circuit pick up tubes with a .010" steel wire to a depth of at least 1 1/2 " for the "choke" to work all proppa like cuz them bitches be clogged.

In addition, you should run the same wire through your idle jets a few times, cuz even though you see light and they look clear, they heve a ring of built-up varnish blocking full flow.

@ Dukiedook I was told that I would be best to avoid Iridiums but figured the old girl could use all the help she can get
so I bought plain NGK's and will put them in today

@ Squirrelman that makes real good sense because choke or no choke she no start good

I bought the top end oil fix from Dale Walkers holeshot performance and have to take the carbs off to do it so I will
pull them apart and give them some love while they are out

Thanks boys for the help greatly appreciated

Success !!! The oil kit really makes her run smoother and a lot quieter.
Cleaned out the choke tubes, reset the float height (they were off a little, carbs were not at the right angle to get proper reading).
NGK copper core plugs, a little cussin & fussin and she starts right up !!! you barley have to breathe on the starter button and VROOM!
Choke works better than it ever did and I am very happy Thanks again boys! This site rocks!!
