sprocket question

    hey if i wanted to add a few teeth to my rear sprocket can i just get a new rear sprocket, use my current front and chain, and just have the dealership add a few links? i'm on a budget, and the bike only has 4k miles anyways. thanks

    you could ask them to ,but i really don't think they'll do it. would not be a good idea. just go with whole new set.

    If you just go up 2 teeth on the rear the stock chain should fit. The best solution would be to order a whole new set; chain and sprockets. I personally would just put the new sprocket on and accept the fact that I may have some reduced component life. I'm putting a whole new set on this Sunday and I am going +2 on the rear, I'll post a write up with my impressions as soon as I get it on. I've got 20K on the stock set and the chain is just now starting to get a few tight spots.

    I don't see why they wouldn't. If you're familiar with your dealer it might not cost you too much. Maybe $50 for the sprocket and another $20 for the extra chain links and masterlinks, (less if you are on good terms) then whatever the shop rates are for installing the sprocket. Not something I would be interested in doing, but whatever floats your boat. :)

    If I were going to do it I would make sure all master links were peened and not the clip type links.

    I'm in the process of going down 1 tooth in the front with a new chain I am planning on using the old rear sprocket anybody have any thoughts on this setup

    Well, maybe I don't understand, but, what the heck are you trying to accomplish in the end of this project. Are you going to the strip or are you racing canyons? Honda has been making this bike for awhile and it is one refined machine as I know it.

    While I can't speak for the original poster, I just replaced my chain and sprockets and I went +2 on the rear. First of all, it only increases your RPM by about 200 in 6th gear, so not a big change. It does make 6th (IMO) more usable in normal interstate riding. The main reason I did it was I was finding myself between gears on some sharp low speed turns. First was a little too low and second didn't have the drive out I wanted. Now I second gear has the range I want. I was prepared to lose a little MPG but so far no change. I think the equalizer is I use 6th a little more now which negates any losses due to the lower gearing. I highly recommend going to Gearingcommander.com if you are thinking about any gearing changes. The site allows you to put in any gearing changes you are thinking about and it gives you a ton of info including the difference from stock.

    well since i rarely get over 130mph so losing a bit on top does not bother me. I love 86 700 but it weighs a ton. I just want a more aggressive takeoff. my goal is to build what i like to think of as a muscle bike or streetfighter. Thanks for any and all experience with similiar projects.

    That looks pretty cool. Now you got me wondering if I want to go a bit larger on the rear while I have the wheel off and apart.

    Could you post back and let me know if the sprocket fit without having to lengthen the chain? TIA.

    Sure, but I will install it only after winter storage (5 months).

    From what I read, it should fit with no problem (110 links), I have a 15T front spocket in my rear pocket, just in case, but I'm sure it will stay there. :smile:

    Interceptor-NICE lookin sprocket!
    Actoin-Do you know how many links your DID gold came with, and did it go on as is or did you need to remove any links? I got exactly the same set-up as you;45 rear & DID chain,but it looks as if I'm going to need to remove 2 links to install.Wassup?????

    Oh yeah,Earnest-
    If you are on a budget,why not just go -1 on your frint sprocket,they are cheaper than a rear and you won't need to pay anybody to lenghten your chain.

    ino our dealership here in utah we will not install an extra link in a chain we recommend getting a new chain and sprocket just because the old mythe if u put a old chain on a new sprocket say goodbye to the sprocket and vise versa.

    JMO, but I've always tried to stay away from smaller front sprockets to avoid increasing angular velocity and resultant decrease in chain life. Although that isn't too big a deal unless you go down to around 12 teeth or so I suppose. I've gone bigger on the front but not smaller.

    I'm pretty sure mine came with a 112 link chain. It went on fine but you'll have to move the adjuster farther back than you had it with your stock set up. I would imagine a 110 link chain would work but the adjustment would be almost full froward so they went with the 112 link.

    for my uses ( top speed not so important) i like -1 tooth front, +2 or +3 rear.

    stock chain works ok, but non-Honda front sprocket without rubber damper is noticably noiser

    I just replaced my front with a 15 tooth.I like the smaller front sprocket but i would not go much more than one tooth. i am still thinkin of goin +2 or +3 in the rear. I am gonna have to add a link or two in the chain since i got my adjustment full forward with this setup now. i took one to many links out when i replaced my chain.
