I have a stock 1998 vfr, and needed to replace the chain/sprockets, and also figured I'd wake it up a bit and go up 2 in the rear while leaving the front sprocket size alone.

Ordered "stock" front, and 45 in the rear...it shows on the invoice 17/45 with a 110 chain...I, for the fun of it, count the teeth, and it's 16/45.

I'm almost 100% certain that I'm going to call them up and have them send me a 17, because I think going 1 down and 2 up will be way to violent on the low end.

    Any 5th gen people concur?

    Thanks in advance...

Yeah, that might be a bit much. Your change (17/45) will net you a 4% increase in final torque multiplication over stock, and a 16/45 will give you an 11% increase. Might be kind of fun if you don't do any long distance riding!

i currently ride the 17/45 ratio on my 98 right now. It's just right for me, but I'm a big guy. If you do more touring than street or twisties then I'd go for the 17/45...80mph indicated is just under 6k rpms. I also have a spare 16 tooth front that I'm a bit leary of putting on...maybe if I ever do a track day I'll stick 'er on...but for now... I like every bit of gas mileage i can get with decent power still...(the pc3 usb is not helping my mileage one bit...but the throttle sure is crisper lol)

The reason they sent a 16 front I believe is b/c the 4th and 6th gens use a 16 in the front if I remember correctly.... correct me if i'm wrong...

Okay...sent the 16 back, and yesterday they installed the 17 front, 45 rear....and I absolutely love it. Much quicker out of the hole, and closed up the gear ratios nicely. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone with a 5th gen.

Try Spacely's Sprockets. Ask for George Jetson.
