    speedometer troubles

Last summer my speedometer started to wiggle and then slowly dropped to zero and never moved again. I took it apart from the engine and have verified that its not the cable as its still spins. Put a drill on the end and ran it up to the gauge and got a reading.

My question is could it be something in the engine area or that mounting block that the cable plugs into it?

I hate it when you are trying to find a solution to a problem and then you finally find a post with someone who has the exact same problem as you but there is no answer....so here it is.

Turns out it was the little plastic gear that mounts to the transmission. That little gear fits on a bolt that spins. That in turn goes through and adapter of sorts to make the cable spin...

Mine just failed on me tonight on my way home. I'm going to have to get in there and see what the trouble is.

it's easy mechanically, just like hooking up cableTV... the PITA is removing the top cowl to get at the speedo connection. Make sure your nylon drive nut is seated on the sprocket, and that the cable seats all the way in to the drive nut (it has a groove on it). job takes about an hour of which 50 mins is taking off and putting back on the cowl (upper fairing).

When I replaced mine, I had a choice of just the cable ($8) or the cable and rubber cover ($15). went all new and lubed the shit out of it. Make sure you route it so all curves are smooth and there are no binding points

What do you lube it with? Just got my new cable, about to install. By the time someone answers, I may have the fairings off.

Was your old one broke? It should just pull out of the outer sheath.
My mech just used some spray lube...

    chain lube

if you read the label it says "chain and cable lube" assuming it's chain wax, bel ray or the like.

WD40 is not lube, you need something a little thicker
