    Hey VFRWorld,

My friend and I are trying to plan a trip from San Francisco to the Grand Canyon and back. Has anyone done this ride (or any along the way) and have suggestions for a good route? I would like to avoid the 5 and other highways as much as possible.

    Thanks,

    Mel

you can come down hwy 1 cut across at hwy 46 then cut down at paso robles to hwy 41e then take a right on hwy 229 for 7 miles, then left on hwy 58 all the way across cali and then cross 5 and keep going to the east then south on hwy (I forget the number) to barstow then I dont know the backroads from there... anyone else?

    Nice Ride

A fun way I know is...80to580to205to120(don't miss the offramp) through yosemite(fee required,$20 I think)to395 left @Big pine on168 (Westgard Pass)to266to195 which will take you to vegas.6hrs to Bishop, about 4 to vegas from there.Careful through yos(USNPS)35n45mph,and395(CHP),other than that...judgement prevails.Check weather, as 10,000ft passes are unpredictable this time of year.Scenic and fun on a vfr, more than hi5

Just did ride that ride through Yosemite. Entered through the southern entrance on Hwy 41 out of Fresno, exited the east on 120 out to the 395. Once you get out of the more touristy portions, you can actually sustain 60-70mph in the more open areas. But count on stopping a lot for pictures, regardless.

Just a heads up, I think they close the northern portion of the park (the west/east passage) promptly on Nov 1.

After yosemite you could jam down the 395 (a little windy but straight and boring for the most part), then cut across death valley to vegas then on to Grand Canyon.
