Howdy peeps, fresh off the purchase of first VFR, I've decided to undertake a project to turn my "extra" 3rd car garage in to a "shop" where I can work on my new pride and joy.

In addition to the basic stuff like pliers/wrenches/screwdrivers/torque wrenches/etc, what are must haves for any home shop?

A good work bench is a really nice thin to have, with a vice on it. If room is a problem a cool way to still have one is to buy a wood door and put big heavy duty hinges on it mounted to the wall. To hold it upright 2 triangle pieces of wood are attached to the bottom and they also have hinges. Fold the 2 support triangles in and swing the door/bench down and flush with the wall.

All of the above and a tile floor. I know lighting was mentioned, but you can't have enough light. so add more.

You do need to leave a few very dark corners so small parts can fly off and hide as required.

Must haves are a good sturdy bench with a vice and a bench grinder(one side stone other wire brush)on it and lots of lights. You will buy the tools as you discover you need them.

A real comprehensive first aid kit, fire extinguisher, & a 1/5th of your favorite alcohol for anesthesia.

Some other must haves: Painters tape for temporary protection of finished surfaces, zip ties in various sizes (can never have enough), shop rags or disposable towels, disposable gloves.

I'm a big fan of locking extensions.

A lot of great suggestions here. Love them all. You will never feel your shop is complete.

Warning though. I love the tile floor idea. Easy to clean especially fluid spills. Easy to find dropped parts. But extremely hazardous when wet. So long as you are aware of that, tile floors are great. Of my shop floor was not vracking and sinking thanks to shitty workmanship bu the builder, I am pretty sure I would tile it. Maybe I will jack jammer the floor and pour a new one..

Hydraulic lift, air compressor, lights, nice big deep sink to wash up in and storage storage storage to keep everything organized. As far as floors; look for the epoxy floors you can do your self. Easy spill clean up and resists staining from fluids. And if you are wearing proper footwear (oil resistant) it shouldn't be slippery.

Oh man, so many times I've need a vise and didn't have one.

My recommendation, a Chromecast for the TV, or some way to get internet content onto the TV. Walkthrough on the forums? Just cast it to the TV in the garage instead of walking back inside.

It's a race deck flooring. Really nice stuff. Non-toxic, supports a ton of weight, self ventilating, self draining. Good for warm and wet climates or cold. 15 year warranty. You can design your own. Pretty cool.
