OK, so I replaced the sub frame with an extra after my wreck but I do not have keys for the seat/helmet lock on the new rail. The old rail is pretty smashed up and I was trying to figure out how I can remove the damn lock mechanism (it appears to be salvageable) and put it on the newer rail. Any recommendations because the manual does not describe how to remove it and it looks like it is not going to come off willingly.
For the VF500 special bolts are used for fixing the seat locks. When tightened the head of the bolt is falling off leaving just a plain round head that has a flat surface. I assume similar bolts are used at the same generation siblings. What I did once was to chop of the sides of the "bolt" using a dremmel and managed to attach an 8 or 9 mm spanner. I can check if you are interested and let you know exactly. All bolts were easily removed and were used again. Alternatively you can just make a central groove and use a flat screwdriver but undoing them won't be as easy as using a spanner, or weld a metallic extension or drill a hole and use a bold extractor. One of above will match your preferences.
Yes, a Dremmel is the correct tool for removal. I've heard of other folks having luck with locking pliers, but I had to grind mine off. NOS security bolts are still available.
Looks like I got all the security bolts off the locks. I used some curved needle nose and locking needle nose pliers to back them out. The bolts look like they are sheared head security bolts, when you hit a set torque value upon tightening the head shears off and leaves a button and flange. Got the old lock secured and I finally got the seat to lock down after I bent the locking bar up a little where it secures the seat nub down. No more seat slipping back on me now!
