Hi all, I bought an 84 500 last October and plan to "rebuild" it in the next few months. Once I had a new battery she ran great, but there are a few other little issues that I want to take care of. I know I have an oil leak somewhere around the bottom, and the fork seals need replacing. What would you list as your top 5 (or 10) things to focus on?
suspension, wheels, tires, exhaust, rejet carbs, new sprockets and chain its just a good idea to replace them, go to a smaller rear sprocket much mcuh better, that what i did to mine, well have fun its just money so spend away.
The wheels, tires, exhaust, and chain are new and in great condition. The suspension felt fine, but I'll add it to the list. If I upgrade to a smaller sprocket will there only be a speed difference? Or are there more benefits to it? I would like to change the exhaust, because I really don't like the look of the "megaphone". That'll be a last minute change. I'm working on all the plastics right now, and the paint job will follow shortly after the bike is top notch.
go check out my thread please, it in the first gen threads under restoring and adding a modern touch to a 86 vf500 yes there is more benefits with a smaller sprocket the v4s have such a broad rpm range that a smaller sprocket really lets the 500s just strech its legs and keeps the rpms down when on the highway.
