Trying to catch up on odds and ends this weekend. Today was bicycles.

I found this Huffy 26" 18 speed Huffy mountain bike someone was throwing away a few weeks ago and brought it home to repair. It's only a $100 Walmart bike but in looking it over, it was in pretty decent shape so why not do a rescue for another bike I can use to jet around locally?

The handlebars were loose from the stem, front wheel askew, both brakes non-operational, and the rusty chain wedged into the bottom bracket, plus it had a bicycle lock attached to the seat bottom - with no key.

I have a bike stand for bike maintenance so wasn't that big a deal getting everything back up to speed. I also keep extra bike chains on hand so had that too. The seat kinda sucks so will change that - otherwise she's back in proper working condition.

Good exercise, of course. I live in an area with lots of side streets and back roads plus we have a beach we can ride on so everyone rides pedal bikes. Of course e-bikes are very popular too and I too have some of those.

I went back out and worked on 3 more of my pedal bikes - the ones I use for just scooting around - not my nice road bikes. Two of them were just like the first one - tossaways that I brought home to fix up. The 4th is a nice KHS I have had for over 20 years that has surf racks on it.

To add a little motorcycle content.......I have quite a few used wheels with old tires on them I have picked up here and there. I intend to re-paint the wheels and then mount them with new tires for some of my bikes. Eventually getting new rubber on all of my bikes.

So today I finally began the tire removal part. I wanted to try a technique I saw on YT that employed the use of a hook bladed Stanley knife to slice off the old tires leaving just two strips along the bead, which are then pried off with your levers. I think it worked pretty good, for my needs. I did two wheels today and will do the rest (~6 more) tomorrow.

Sorta random, sorta Honda. I started dating a girl a few months ago that paints motorcycles as a side-gig. A lot of the ASRA riders have her paint their bikes. She's actually painting one of my teammates new RS660's at her shop now. Anyway, a few months ago (before we'd met) she bought this 1970 CB100 that hadn't been run in probably a decade. She threw a paint job on the tank and side panels after trying to match the orange. I think it looks pretty damn awesome.

I just got back from the first test ride around the neighborhood. It runs surprisingly well for having just kind of taken a guess at all the setup. Brakes leave something to be desired though, hah.

It turns out I was actually able to use my limited carburetor skills in a bartering exchange. She's been teaching me paint prep and repair of race fairings. Basically, I'm allowed to do the menial tasks that don't take a ton of skill, hah. I'm getting better with the DA sander. And I had her go through the entire carburetor and rebuild it while I just sort of told her what she needed to do and explained how all the parts work. But I didn't do the actual work. The thing fired on the third kick when we first started it. So that was neat.

So now she should have one of the sweetest little pit bikes at the track.
