50 years ago - me on the right, with my college roommate and fellow "Smyrnite", Big Jim giving the power sign - at the bowl, NSB.

With our fishes - which everyone was riding at the time. ;)

I think I owned about 6 of them in all before we all moved on (back) to single fins and later thrusters.....

Good eye! So what we have is a true twin (upside down and shaped like Jim's board) called the Saint from T&C. Then my favorite board, the SINR (T&C) that has 2 twin sized fins + 1 mini central trailer. Next is the "pipe" board which is a thruster knife, and last is my thruster custom from Rusty that I have taken around parts of the world. It is a great all arounder. :)

Love the photo Bazza! Man, that is a good pic of 50yrs ago. You guys set the tone for all of us, respect!
    And no leashes!!! whaaa!

Thank you - and massive respect back to you, my brother!

Killer quiver there, Rogue! We started wearing leashes around '72-'73, IIRC. Started with homemade ones...lol....

I could share some cool stories with you of all the crazy and goofy stuff we did over the years - but then you probably have lived the same stuff yourself, but in a different era.

In the end....it all boils down to the same thing. The special bond we share with Mother Ocean!

Hey - that's a Pontiac LeMans, Linkken. Jim was really proud of that car. We're parked in "the bowl" - which was the back way to get to The Inlet - our main surf spot. Avoids driving along the beach. We have a huge park there now (Smyrna Dunes Park) so no driving - but they did a good job of preserving all the natural dunes and stuff. I live a 15 minute walk away so livin' the dream!

One more pic of me on a twin fin at The Inlet here on a nice fun day. Double wing swallow tail with channels on the bottom. Glassed in fins. That board was fast! If you look real close you might see the leash attached to my back ankle. :)

    Thanks, man.

    Sweet wave!

I hear ya on getting someone to take pics!

And I DID have a girlfriend who did so for me, so am a lucky man that way. She was very cool, too.

I also had my best friend, JL, who did as well here and there. He and I were at the same stage of learning back in the 70's so a lot of surf sessions where we cheered each other on! Of course I also shot pics of him out surfing and also on land here and there. Wish I had shot more looking back.

The shots I posted above were taken by another surf buddy who has probably taken more in the area than anyone else in history. He contacted me in the weeks following that day and offered 4 slides taken of me for not much money - just to buy film. That was a Saturday so a bit crowded and as you can see it was a really fun day!

Maybe you need to figure out a "creative" way to get your wife behind the camera! :)

I did something similar when I was much younger. I lived in Brandon Manitoba. We did not use surf boards though. Matter of fact, we did not do it in the ocean or any kind of water for that matter. Maybe frozen water. We used toboggans and slid down hills while wrapped to look like the Michelin man with just the slits of our eyes visible through our scarves and tuques.

My first car was a Le Mans of that vintage. Drove that for over 25 years and sold it for more than I paid for it. Should never have done that, but my interests had changed. I began on my quest to fill my garage with woodworking tools and machinery. Now that I am getting too old to manage big pieces of plywood and MDF, I need to start selling most of the stuff off now and start shopping around for a scooter to get around.

A very old surfing friend of mine re-located to Bend, Oregon a few years ago. The end of surfing for him? Nope. Hangs out with Gerry Lopez and the Clark foam guy on ski slopes, river waves, and wave pools. While also embracing all the natural beauty the state affords someone who grew up a surfer.

Our lives consist of chapters. No matter what, how, or where that takes us....you just have to keep paddling......

I only started surfing because I needed to stay in shape for WERA endurance racing and I damaged the cartilage in my ankle too bad to run anymore (from a high side at Miller Motorsports park during a sprint race). Required surgery and I haven't run more than 400m since 2010.

My buddy took me out starting at age 36 and I haven't stopped since. This was my first short-ish board when I was dawn patrol nearly every morning before work. my form was still very much long board..hhahaha

See, this is why I think surfing is more dangerous than riding motorcycles. There could be 37 sharks in this picture, and you'd never even know it until you were dead. I've never come across a great white or bull shark at any race track or public road in the Midwest :Bounce:

Barton Lynch posted this on FB and sums it up better than anyone I've ever heard. Well worth a listen.......
