I was wondering did the 1986 VFR 750 or 700 come with progressively wound front springs.

THE stock springs are wound with some coils much closer together than others, so that makes it a progressively WOUND spring.....but i'm not sure that makes it a progressive RATE spring.

I do know that Progressive (brand) springs were one of the first mods i made back in 1991, and they are much better than stock. However, the spacer length recommendation from Progressive was WAY OFF, and i needed to go over 1" shorter than instructed before i got proper sag.

I think the RaceTech springs or others can be set up better for an individual's exact weight.

Note that stock springs go into the fork with close-wound coils down, while Progressive specifies that their close-wound coils should go up.

    LENGTH of stock springs=17 inches

Length of Progressive (brand) springs=18 3/4 inches

Therefore, if your springs are longer than 17 " they are aftermarket.

    for inside the fork tube???

are we talking about the same thing??

as I understand it, the aftermarket springs are longer than the factory ones. an easy way to compensate for this would be to just cut this piece (in yellow circle) the difference in the spring lengths.

Yes for inside the fork tube is where you can put a PVC fork spacer. Why cut the factory spacer when you can get 10 feet of 1"pvc for 2 bucks. Just have it sticking out of the tube between .5" to 1" for your preference in preload. But then again you have a 98 so you can actually get your parts at the factory so feel free to hack up the stock spacer.
