While riding over the weekend, I notice that the magnets from my tank bag were causing small places in the paint to take on an imprint of the rubber texture that keeps the bag from sliding. We were riding for eight hours a day over a two day weekend trip. Before this ride I had never noticed this. Oh and after I took the bag off a few hours later the texture which you can see and feel would go away. I really thought this was weird. My question, has anyone else experienced this and would this cause a problem to my paint in the future if I continue to use the bag?

Well i know my bag scratched up my tank, only advice i have is keep it clean.

sounds like it's a problem with the rubber on the bottom, maybe wash it and hopefully what ever is rubbing off will wash out in the sink.

One of my bags leaves residue from the rubber bottom too, it cleans off no problem.

I always wipe the dust/grit off before putting a bag on and if I'm riding with a microfiber cloth, whenever I can think about it.

    Grit is the big enemy.

I haven't (yet) had a problem with my tank bag. I have a small Nelson-Rigg magnetic bag.

I love mine.....don't have to worry about tank bag (or other) scratches again! Cheap, and worth the time and effort.

You have an aftermarket paint job, right?
I wonder if your clear coat is thicker than stock and a little gummier?
It might just be molding around the magnets and then "relaxing" after you remove the bag.

Yea the paint is aftermarket. drewl you mention that the clear coat could be thicker than normal and gumming up and then relaxing. Do you think that could cause a problem, such as actually pulling the paint off the bike. I just don't want to have it painted down the road due to my tank bag.

I think drewl is onto something with the paint too.

Also, a friend of mine had his tank bag discolor his gas tank! It was a Kawasaki ZX6, but still he was upset.

The magnets in the bag discolored the paint?

    Go figure.

If your clearcoat is anything but rock hard, IMO, it was not mixed right. I'd be talking to the tankbag manufacturer too. Bikes vibrate and grit under the bag mount acts just like sandpaper.

Something you might try is a thorough cleaning of your paintwork. Tons of good stuff out there for that. After cleaning and removal of the existing "wax", apply a coat of any of the good polymer "waxes", wait a week, wash the tank with a mild car/bike wash detergent and apply a second coat of the "wax."

The deal here is that the polymer "waxes" dry quickly but need cure time allowing the polymer chains to kind of get to know each other.

The clearcoat was just an idea. If it is thick and soft enough to be moved by your tank bag you should be able to make a fingernail mark in it too with some pressure. If you can do that, then go back to the painter and show him what's going on. If he's cool, he'll fix it.

The wax idea works too, same test with the fingernail.
