hello everyone, i'm new to the vfrworld but not to bikes. today i did fifty miles on my new vfr which is a used bike. perhaps it needs a wee topping up of water but i was concerned about the heat that was transferred to the alloy frame, which to me seemed uber hot. any advice peeps ? kind regards johnny.
HI Johnny and Welcome. As it's a used bike, you could flush and refill the system incase of any crud build-up. They run hot though and don't enjoy being stressed in traffic on hot days. Mine was doing it today (ambient temp 90°) - always makes me nervous. I've heard good things about WaterWetter too but I've yet to try it. Instead of making a new thread, maybe someone can answer a question: what's best in hot weather - 100% distilled water or 50/50 antifreeze mix? I seem to remember reading somewhere that water runs a tad less hot than antifreeze mix. Thanks.
WELCOME ! so what year VFR would that be?? heat transfer to frame is normal. on a new- to- you bike , always flush the cooling system , add fresh coolant and determine that the fan is working proppa. most common causes of overheating on a VFR are failure of the thermoswitch, bad radiator cap causing low coolant level, unpluged fan wiring (ground), blown fuse, bad fan (rare), or stuck -closed thermostat (rare). Enjoy !
I forgot to mention the obvious, as Squirrelman just pointed out, - be sure the thermostat and radiator cap are in good shape and that the fan comes on (it should start spinning when the temperature guage is at 3/4 of the way up. If the needle starts hitting the 'H' shut her off! As for the frame; I wouldn't be so worried about this as I would the wiring. Actually, I thought my right boot was going to catch on fire today.
