Near Fortune, CA take 211 down to the Lost Coast, loop around and exit at Weott and the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. You will not regret the detour.
Looks like slab much of the way out of Portland. If you want to get off I-5, you can head your way to Estacada from Portland. That will take a little navigation but it's doable. Then follow 224 along the Clackamas River to Detroit which is on Highway 22. Through national forest, lots of fast sweepers - no houses or businesses for miles once you leave Estacada (top off your tank here). Once it leaves the river you're through the forest, but still good 2 lane road. Beautiful ride. From there follow Hwy 22 south to Santiam Junction, then pick up 126 to McKenzie Bridge. From there you pick up Hwy 242 to Sisters. 242 is one of the twistiest roads in Oregon - crests the Cascades through ancient lava flows with spectacular views of the Three Sisters. You won't know whether to enjoy the twisty road or the scenery. Drops you in to the town of Sisters which is sort of a "wild west" kind of town. Then it's 20 miles in to Bend where you can then pick up 97 south to K Falls. The 242 route is one you won't forget. Google images of Highway 242 summit for photos. You'll be off the gird though - little cell phone coverage along this route, but a great ride and spectacular scenery. This will probalby add 3 to 4 hours to your planned route to Hwy 97. Let me know if you'll be coming through Klamath. We can meet up and join you for a ways or give you a place to crash before heading back to Reno. There's also some fun roads around here as well. -Jake
