Wasn't quite sure. Was going to do an oil change. Looking at the book it's saying 10w30. Kills me, I have 4 quarts of Castrol r4 super bike 5w40. Do you guys think that is fine or not a good idea?

Awe Are you up north? that would be good for cooler weather for sure.. If you don't mind reading , this pretty much sums up 90% of most oil questions. https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/

Thanks RVFR. I am up north weathers turning for the better, at least for my liking. I'll be waiting for the 60's at least. After thinking about it though I'm just gonna shoot the lock off the wallet and get the recommend vis'. Know to decide which to go with. I think I'll stick with castrol.

One really can't go to wrong with brands, 10-40w covers a very wide range of temps. so unless your down in the 20-30s most of the time.. that's way to cold for my ass to be riding in.. I'd stick with 10-40.

Before I believe this RAT guy, I would have to have confirmation by Norcalboy, Knight and SOW that all that is not bogus.

I wonder why Honda stopped publishing an optional range of oils based on weather-related temperature like in the 5th gen manual, but instead specifies 10W-30 only. I normally would recommend following the manufacturer instructions, but this is one of those cases that does not quite make sense. Oil has improved in performance every year and thus there should be more options today, not fewer.

You should place a call to Honda Motorcycle Customer Service. They do respond. Maybe their opinion will give us something not explicitly listed in the manual.

Suggestion: Add your bike and location to your profile so that we see the information with every post.

On one hand, 5 weight is better for cooler temperature starting. Much wear happens on startup and a 5 weight can help reduce that wear long term. On the other hand, the wider the viscosity spread, the more additives are used to create that spread, 5 to 40 being relatively wide.

Honda manual is out of date, I mix oil of same brand one qt 05-40 and 2.3 qts of 10-40 Castrol rt racing is about the best there is ma2 rating. I run in colder weather
. 05-40 is very good except in super hot. I switch to all 10-40 in middle of summer. Syn oil can take a lot of heat, dino oil for lawn mower.

Use what strikes your fancy. Just change it and the filter on a regular basis.

I use Shell Rotella Synthetic 5W-40. 130k and ticking...
