put in 3.5, then crank it over till the oil light goes out, let it sit a bit and top it off using the level on the dipstick.

And you think you are actually helping? From the manual...

3.5 liters (3.7US qt, or 3.1 Imp qt) after disassembly

2.9 liters (3.1 US qt, or 2.5 Imp qt) after draining. Filter is extra.

This is no where near 5 US qts. Even further away from 5 Imp Qts.

    Car Oil = BAD

Motorcycle oil is a must. Unless you like changing clutches often.

FYI - I've never found the manual specs to be correct. It usually takes right at 4 quarts with filter replacement.

    Agree !

But is better to put in 3, start bike & top off from there .
The 1000's due not like overage on the oil w/o problems happening (seals, blasting out overage in air filter, ect, ect, ect  !

Jamie, sorry to disagree, but car oil should be fine - as long as the round API seal does not say "Energy Conserving" on the bottom.

I know that the "Energy Conserving" oils have fricion modifiers which will make your clutch slip - and you'll never get all that oil out of the fiber disks - which necessitate replacement. Is there another reason I'm not aware of?

There is soooo much info about this topic it could make your head spin. Do the research. The bottom line:

    Car oil = BAD

I'm not sure if I stated that before.
