Any recommendations on a good synthetic oil for 2007 VFR800? No manual, so I need to know which weight and how many quarts I'll need. I live near Galveston, TX, so don't really have cold weather anymore. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Mobil 1 and Amsoil are among the most popular choices for synthetic oil but also the most expensive. I've used Shell Rotella T full synthetic and is much cheaper and works well for the price and can be readily found at lots of places including Wal-Mart. I've also used Castrol Actevo synthetic with good results but the bottom line is that you should be fine with any major brand as long as you change your oil at least every 4-5k miles. If you live in Texas you should be fine using anything from 5w-40 to 15w-40.

Got Castrol Edge 10W-40 full synthetic. Didnt see any JASO marking on back, but should be ok in bike, right?

10w-40 is usually the weight and just over 3qts so you will need 4.

If what you bought is regular car oil in 10w-40 and does not carry an API rating on the back of the bottle of "energy conserving" or the newer "resource conserving" then you will be OK. You wont be getting additive packages that you would be getting in a motorcycle specific oil because most of these additives have been reduced for emmission reasons in car oils.

In future if you so chose, you can get motorcycle specific oils like castrol edge 10w-40 4t synthetic, mobil 1 10w-40 4t synthetic both motorcycle specific. I find them at my local autozone store. Sometimes you have to ask at the counter.

Shell Rotella is t6 synthetic 5w-40 synthetic and the 15w-40 dino oils are both diesel oils that recently started carrying the JASO certification. Also available in a gal jug pretty cheap. Motorcyclists have used diesel oils for years because the hold up well in bikes. Mostly they carry just about the same additive packages.

LOTS of oil opinion on this site.

Good luck have fun and enjoy

I've always stuck to motorcycle specific oils for my bikes and my supercharged Sea Doo. Both machines have wet clutches and most automotive oils have additives to reduce wear that can cause clutch slippage in an oil bathed clutch. Lot pricier though, but only change the Doo's oil once a season (supercharged engine contaminates the oil much quicker) and the VFR every 5k mi. Worth it to me.

Motul is pretty much the standard oil found in every bike workshop I've seen in Australia. I use the brand myself. Mobil 1 is also great but frighteningly expensive.

I've been using the Shell Rotella T6 synthetic; only about two years now, but no problems with it. Search around and you can find a lot of arguments on oil, it's like asking '1911 vs. Glock?' on a gun board.
