For those who may be looking for a modern shock solution, I am developing an Ohlins solution now. The unit includes adjustable ride height which is great for compensating for tire size variations and overall chassis setup adjustments. Adjustable compression and rebound damping, and remote reservoir. The only real compromise was the remote preload adjustment which was not possible to fit if adjustable ride height was to be maintained.

The OEM shock is very short, only 270mm on the 86 VFR750F. 87 models went to a 280mm length. The photo with the OEM shock is actually from an 87 model. I was able to come up with an overall length of 273mm as a starting point. I am still working out best valving and spring rate, as OEM setup was not really that great. I started with the same base setup specified for the original Ohlins shock for this application and built the shock from a variety of Ohlins components. This setup should also work on 86 & 87 VFR700s as well. Some special parts were needed but if people are interested, let me know and I can provide info when I get the package finished.

    Hi.
Very interesting. Actually, we all gotta deal with shoks' and forks' lil problems..

I'm trying to have the rear end lifted by modifying the shock leverage, in order to improve bike's agility.
Certainly a brand new Ohlins shock would be great, if price doesnt skyrocket.
Please, keep me informed if U can.

Doesn't Ohlins already make a shock for these models? I just rebuilt one for a guy a couple of months ago. Maybe you should call them because they would have the valving already figured out for you. Make sure to ask for someone else besides the first person you get, they usually don't know much (especially at Ohlins USA).

I checked extensively on the Ohlins shocks, the model for the 86-87 VFRs has long been unavailable. There may certainly be some running around. Fortunatley, I have access and contact with a number of very experienced people at Ohlins, some who have been with them for 20 yrs. We were able to find the factory build sheets on the specific shock for the 86 VFR. We decided to use many updated parts, piston, etc so this completely changes the specific valving but we were close on the first attempt. I am not changing the linkage so that helps simplify the effort. Should be very good when completed.

The shock I serviced was not very different from new Ohlins units. I'm glad to hear that you have a good contact there. Do you have this person's contact info? The last guys I talked to there sucked. I was trying to identify if a clearly aftermarket shock was an older Ohlins unit. He thought it was a stock CBR shock. BZZZZZ, wrong answer!

I'll be interested to see how it works out for you.

The best contact I have for that type of historical info comes from Stig Pettersson at Pettersson Pro Suspension (PPS Racing). Stig has been the west coast Ohlins factory service support for as long as I can remember. He has archives of documentation going waaaay back. He has probably forgotten more about Ohlins stufff than the collective knowledge of most people combined. He is a hands on guy and knows the product inside and out. You won't find a nicer more helpful guy... contact him at http://www.ppsracing.com/

    Hi.

whilest Im awaiting news from Ohlins shock improvements and availability,

I may also be interested in the fox shock, too.

As already told, in fact, I'll have the rear end lifted thru a spacer on the OEM shock, but anyway a better ( and not too pricey) one would surely be better.

unluckily I already ordered the K&N airl filter from Bike Bandit. (got here in 4 days-40 bucks shipping).
I dont have dynojet kit for carbs but hope it wont be necessary, even putting on a 4:1 muffler on left side of swing arm.
