My aftermarket R/R lasted about three months before it gave up the ghost. I ordered an OEM Honda unit and installed it this morning prior to my commute. Voltmeter was rock steady at 13.9 vs the 14.4 I'm used to. Perhaps Honda has decided to peg the new ones at 13.9??

Unit looked considerably different than the original one and different from the aftermarket one. Bigger, thicker, more fins, metal backplate, came with longer screws ('cause its thicker). Wires were heavier gage. $170.00.

    Stay tuned.

Yep, did the fan mod when I installed the aftermarket unit. Apparently didn't do the trick. Also went through all the grounds and connections, Also replaced the stator. Also replaced the battery. Unit still failed in 1,000 miles. Hopefully this "brand H" reg/rec will do the trick.

My r/r is the new design and it charges above 14v. If it were me, I'd make sure the stator wires are not burned at the connector (behind the right side mid fairing on my 93) and that the battery had a full charge, at least 12.8 volts.

R/R have been a problem child for a long time, do a google search and you'll find tons of info about this. The latest generation seems to be better then the last two types I've seen. The new ones have an aluminum back plate and have cooling fins molded into the casting.

I've burnt up several of these, but this latest one has lasted a couple years so far without a hitch.

My '98 charging gremlins never cease. I bought the bike in May '06 after which left me stranded on my first long ride and had to bump start it and limp home. I did all the trouble shooting and replaced the RR with that new H one too after burning out an Electrosport one. Everything was cool up until a month ago when I installed an alarm. I thought everything was fine until I let the bike sit for a week and the battery was down to 4.5 volts. (alarm not armed) Charged it up again and now it won't hold a 13-13.2V charge and I have had to disconnect the alarm and won't have a chence to troubleshoot the system until this weekend. I am hoping it is just the battery. I'm gonna be real pissed if the RR is killed again, especially at $200 a pop.

    Stator

Stator may be the culprit on your 98. Check the output of the three yellow wires from the Stator (feeding the Reg/Rec). On mine the outputs were uneven and when I pulled the stator cover the windings were burnt. It seems that a bad stator will repeatedly kill r/R units.

Thanks for the input. I plan to check that this weekend and am prepared to buy a new stator, RR and battery too. This is really making me crazy.

UPDATE: I have checked the stator and the output is the same on all three at about 60V at 5000 rpm. I went and had the battery load tested and it checked out fine too. I also have no leaks, so no shorts. I diode tested the RR and it indicates that it is bad even though when the bike is running it shows about 14V across the terminals at idle and about 13.27 at 5000 rpms. I don't know how the RR went bad in 2000 miles, maybe because of heat, so I will be doing the PCU fan mod on the new one.
