    Hello all,
I just signed up to the forum and wanted to get some insight from those more knowledgable than myself. I just bought a beatiful used '98 vfr800 bike. I bought it on ebay and picked it up today(out of state). It was nice so I decided to ride it home, rather than trailer it like I had planned (let the wife drive the truck and empty trailer behind me). The bike looks brand new, shiny, hardly a mark on it, sounds great, shifts smoothly, and only has 10,200 miles on it. I was in love with it, however after riding it home 170 miles, the tripometer showed 170 new miles, but the odometer hadn't moved. Still 10,200 miles on it. What gives?? I called the seller back and asked him if he knew the odometer was broke (this was not disclosed and obviously was an apealing aspect of the bike, being low miles and all). The seller swears he was unaware and that the odometer previously worked. I still like the looks/feel of the bike, although I'm obviously disappointed that the mileage is off. What could make the tripometer continue to read on this bike, but not the odometer?? They are both digital read outs. (speedo and tach are analog).
    Would appreciate any feedback,
Baffled and Likely Suckered in WV

I wouldn't worry about the mileage being wrong. The VFR engine is good for many tens of thousands of miles, however, the if the seller marked "actual mileage" on the title, you may have a cause for recorse. I don't think there is any way to prove exactly when the odometer broke, unless the seller fesses up. If you like the bike, have the odometer repaired, then send a copy of the bill to the seller. Maybe he'll pay part or all of it. But, hurry. If you want to leave him bad feedback on E-Bay you only have 30 days. I'd give the seller a chance to make it right, and tell him you may have to leave him bad feedback if you can't come to some agreement.

you are probly doing alright if the bike itself meets your expectations for low mileage.you can tell by the wear on most parts of it if its far off. Check all the wear items like the peg rubbers, brakes, chain, sprockets, rub marks on the foot guides, etc...I expect you have a lowone if its a good as you say.

weird half the digital is wacky.?? If the previous just resold it and never drove it, he could be honest..:) or it actually did go wacky as you picked it up..even weirder.....

In the old days one never looked at the odom anyway as usually all disconected or wound back.It was simple with the analog, I gave up taking them too seriously long ago and just went by the shape.. with the digital its easy to stop them, but usually not half the display!!...:)

sounds like you got a nice one!

Just get it fixed before you sell it..:)
