Well I purchased an '86 VF500F end of July and it ran great the only thing it needed was a clutch master cylinder. It is now middle of August and although I have the master cylinder rebuilt, it is still far from done. I have stripped it down except for the block itself and cleaned and painted nearly all of it. I am finally in the process of putting it back together. The only thing left to paint is the body work.

Most of what I have learned so far has been from this forum. Mainly just viewing as a guest. Finally decided to become a member and share a photo of the bike before I tore into it.

Brother, you should have ridden it until fall. The winter is the time to strip a bike down. Now is the time to be out riding. You said it ran fine...

As to master cylinders, rebuilding is usually false economy and they don't last. I'll never rebuild one again, just buy a new one - if the bike's worth keeping it's worth a new MS.

36,000 kms - is that real mileage? It doesn't seem the MS should be failing at that mileage. In fact you should need a battery, tires and maybe chain and sprockets at that mileage.

Anyway I hope you get it on the road before it snows. Live and learn...

I completely agree with you and that was my original intent to fix what needed fixing and ride till the winter, but then i wanted to paint this and that, get a new one of these etc. Thankfully we don't get snow till late november at the earliest...usually. So i will have a bit of time on it i hope.
