Hi guys... working on my 93 project bike and i came across a problem with my neutral light always being on. I replaced the neutral switch and it's still on all the time. I've ran it through all the gears (on the center stand) and it won't go off. It will go off if the side stand is down. I don't know if this is an override of the side stand switch though. Anyone run across this problem?? any ideas or suggestion will be great.

You might have screwed the starter interlock diode somehow.

Make sure when you suss out your problem, you tell us! And; No, I have never heard of this problem on this bike. I go with dah squirrelman (squirrel in German is a funny sounding word - Ice-Hunch-Inn) on this one, get a manual if you dont have one. Gud Luck!

OK.. so i started to look into the problem today. I had a few minutes before leaving for work so i got the wiring diagram out and started to trace circuits. One leg of the neutral switch goes to the clutch switch, and the other leg goes to the clutch diode. So for fun and giggles and it was right there, i pulled off one of the connectors on the clutch switch and it works now. After work i pulled the clutch switch off and there was a little cut out where i could see the contacts stuck together. The switch is not a servicable item but i broke it apart anyway and tried to get it working. Ended up breaking a little tab inside but got it to somehow break contact when the button is pushed. Put the switch back on and the neutral light works as it is supposed too. New switch on order.

The clutch diode is supposed to prevent the clutch sw/ from effecting the neutral light. The stuck sw/ may have burned out a diode. You are probably going to need a new one, so you should check it out soonest, so you can add it to your order, to prevent further delays.

Way to GO!!! I remember working on 60s Honda and being able to take apart the switch and actually clean it. That was when things were hand assembled, not like todays, throw away components.

I had a problem with my ON/OFF switch and took it apart and cleaned the contacts with card-board from a match book, I then sprayed some contact cleaner/lubricant in there and have not had a problem since. Good thing you found it.

I checked the clutch diode and got good readings - continuity in one direction / no continuity in the other direction. So i think the clutch switch was the whole problem. Thanks for all the help and advice.

In order to start the bike, it has to be in neutral or the clutch needs to be engaged. The way it is wired, the neutral light would be energized, if not for the diodes, when the clutch is engaged.

Your original complaint of the neutral light continuously on, was linked to a stuck clutch switch. The stuck switch is the same as a continuously engaged clutch. It still should not feed back to the neutral light.

If the diode is in fact okay, then there must have been a short somewhere else in the circuit. It is possible that the short was removed, while disconnecting or moving the wires, during the troubleshooting phase.

To be on the safe side, I would short the clutch switch wires (same as engaging the clutch) and try to duplicate the original snag, by playing with the appropriate wiring and connectors. (remember to take it out of neutral)

If the light stays off, you'll probably be okay. If it comes back at a later date, you'll have an idea of what to look for.

    Good luck.

Thanks Krazay, i'll do some more checking around. Hopefully i'll get the new switch soon, haven't heard from the parts dept. about my order so it might be one of those hard to get items.
