    Fuel

I would suggest unplugging the fuel pump and jumping it off the battery to charge the fuel system to ensure you are getting fuel delivery. And yes it will gravity feed but would run fuel pump myself.

    bugs

Had a rare one about thirteen years ago where fuel system was open and beetles got in lines. Guts were gone but wings and shells got in screens and would plug up after a short ride and had to get really pissed off to blow the whole thing apart to figure it out.Anger but a lesson learned.

jump the fuel pump relay with a wire, open one float bowl drain screw and wait for drippage to confirm fuel flow, close screw.......then start your bike.

find which circuit has the short by removing all fuses and adding one at a time

If you provide power directly to the pump and it works - but jumping the relay does not, then you may have a bad relay.

Also, before troubleshooting, remove, clean and reconnect all related electrical harness connections, power, and ground points for the circuit you're working on.

If there is a short you will have a blown fuse, so which circuit is it?

The pump is not really needed for at-home testing cuz you can bottle-feed fuel directly into fuel line to carbs......
