I first joined VFR world in January of 07 just to check out what VFR's were all about. Did a lot of research especially on this site and last night I finally picked up my new pride and joy, an immaculate, bone stock 97. Saw it posted on Craigs list from a guy I knew about who fixes up Hondas. We went for a ride last night and I was hooked. It lived up to every expectation I've read about and heard about. I have limited experience and this is certainly the heaviest and most powerfull bike I've every ridden. I was a little bit intimidated at first but the bike is so smooth and easy to ride I felt very comfortable in short order. I will for sure do some practice with low speed manuvering. The Naval Air Station in Alameda which is close to where I live and no longer being used by the Navy has quiet streets and open paved areas just right for stuff like that. And by the way that gear whine is so adictive. Sounds like the bike has a blower. Looking forward to many miles of ecstacy.

Congrats, and welcome. I just recently got a VFR, after wanting one for years, and they truly are unique. BTW, have you considered an MSF course? I mention that because of the "limited experience" you mention. Never a bad idea; I've heard nothing but good things about it. I've been riding street for about 35 years now, and I'm thinking about it. I'll probably find out that I've been nothing but lucky...

Oh, just so you know; get used to the "generation" gaps... You'll see what I mean :blah: :smash:

I did take a MSF last year after being off bikes for a long time. I highly recommend it to all. Funny story, the one person who rode to the course on her Harley was one of the few who failed the course! The only points I had deducted were for the the figure eight. I went about 2 inches out on the left turn portion. Man I was pissed.

Congrats on the score. The VFR, as I am sure you will find, is a fun bike and is deceptive in looking like it isn't fast or that it's bulkiness would hamper cornering. My 93 hung pretty good with the sport bikes I rode with.

    Update

Well it's been a little over 2 months and almost 1000 miles since I originally posted. I have had the time of my life and wish I had done this sooner. I've been reading some of the posts by people who are new riders and are either thinking of or actually learning to ride on a VFR. WIth my almost negligable experience I qualify as a new rider and can say if your careful and respectfull of the weight and power it is possible to start on a VFR. One caviat is I have thousands of miles on road and mountain bikes. The miles on road bikes for me was invaluable as if you think your invisible on a motorcycle try being in traffic on a bicycle. My awareness of my surrondings is at a greater level than most and when riding in traffic that is what it's all about. The only things so far that have given me any concern is the bike is a little heavy which rears it's ugly head at crawling speeds and stopping on an uphill incline. Carefully planning ahead remedies most problems. As I originally said I've found my 97 to be smooth and the throttle for a carburated bike is quite smooth. I'm still working on making my entrance into turns better and I guess that will go on for a long time. One peculiar problem I've encountered is I feel very comfortable when turning right but not so when going left. I am getting better but I'm curious if others have had similar problems when learning. Later.
